Having listened again to official, CD-quality versions of all 42 (!) Eurovision entries, my impression is that this is by some distance the worst Eurovision in the last 10 years, maybe even the worst edition of the modern pop Eurovision. My favourite song this year would probably only have been about fourth last year and wouldn't even have made my top 10 in a banner year like 2003.

12: The Ark - The Worrying Kind (Sweden)
10: Koldun - Work Your Magic (Belarus)
8: Serebro - Song No. 1 (Russia)

Nobody else on the planet will like the Belarussian entry but I think it's bloody great. It probably won't even get to the finals. There are dozens of Ark songs better than "The Worrying Kind", of course, the number of which is probably similar to the number of Eurovision 2007 songs that "The Worrying Kind" is better than.

At this stage, the other points from the Jury of Edwardistan would go to Denmark, Norway, Cyprus, Moldova, Armenia, Slovenia and Netherlands but that might change a lot.

Favourites, predictions, poptimists. I predict Russia will win this time.

I got both Week 9 zipfiles sent off in the end, so will post those later.

Week 10 sees the current leaders of BOTH leagues sit in judgement - very important for their title rivals to get their tracks right, then! Luckily [livejournal.com profile] inhibitorylinks and [livejournal.com profile] koganbot have provided intros to help you...

Nominate using the poll below, and tracks, as ever, to leagueofpop@gmail.com - or I can hunt out your nominations but this is a chancier prospect for several reasons.

Good luck! Also look out later today for the probable announcement of summer orgafun.

First of all, some thoughts on the Spring orgafun ) So the next Poptimists event will be...

The Pop Open - a Summer tournament of taste. I haven't finalised the instructions but it will go a little something like this:

- Players submit tracks, which are anonymised and posted by me and voted on by the community as a whole, in groups or pairs.
- To give a loose structure to things, each round will be themed (eg "love", "fear", "politics") to give baffled spectators some sort of point of comparison.
- Depending on how many people enter, this will be a straight knockout, or a short round-robin leading to final knockout stages. So the commitment will be much smaller, even for winning players. And because each match only involves a couple of players we can be way more flexible as to holidays, and it's much less work for me.
- The fun for spectators is hearing and voting on new tracks (as ever). The fun for players is either pleasing the crowd or finding out what people really think of their beloved favourite tunes.

Want to play? Nothing will happen until after the LoP ends but I'm interested to know who's up for it. Your only commitment will be to send in tracks (between 1 to 3 depending on format). That's all!
