[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] poptimists
I realised this morning that because I won't be on the web tomorrow there is zero chance of the Ultimate Pop Star Showdown actually finishing on Friday, so instead of overwhelming you with polls I'll be putting the pop fights out a couple at a time and make this a slightly longer term bit of orgafun.

Anyway the preliminary round is over and the results are in:

KATE BUSH beat Celeste.
SERGE GAINSBOURG beat Joan Jett.
CHER beat Paris Hilton.
DUSTY SPRINGFIELD beat Phil Oakey.
NENEH CHERRY beat Kelly Clarkson.
BILL DRUMMOND beat H Steps.
MICHAEL JACKSON beat Dr Alban.
LILY ALLEN beat Thom Yorke.

We'll be meeting all of those qualifiers again - in fact we'll be meeting two in the poll under this very cut, along with two stars who have actually teamed up on the same (very good indeed) record! Which will make it through to round two? You decide!

I think my dithering over Dusty/Phil prevented me from voting in the prelim.

is ODB really that good on his own tho?

i don't really know any of his other solo singles i must confess. i never really bothered with Wu-Tang solo albums even tho they all seemed to get good reviews every time.

Kelis has so many good singles this IS a clear victory as far as i'm concerned.

Exactly. I have a CD best-of ODB, but I cannot remember anything by him apart from the duet! Whereas I can sing several Kelis hits.

BOTHERD about both these fites tbh

Only Cher is really a STAR out of these four, and more the Hollywood Boulevard sort than the [whatever the pop equiv. of HB is] sort.

Theorizing

From: [identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com
Like freakytigger I am kind of going on instinct on these, but if I wanted to tease out some "whys," a couple of thoughts based on these matches.

+ Longer career > shorter career unless perhaps bonus points for tragic mishaps
+ Top flight pop stars need at least a couple of chart smashing hit singles.
+ more to come in later weeks)

ODB just doesn't seem like a very good popstar to me, despite being tabloid fodder. I can't think of any massive ODB singles (possibly my bad), nor can I imagine one coming along. He's always going to be "featuring ODB" on somebody else's single, at best.

I don't know, I've always liked the idea of the pop star who has a couple of fantastic singles and then disappears down the dumper, never to be heard from again. A lot of pop stars become too workmanlike the longer they go on, even if they still manage the occasional great single.

I have to think this is a UK vs. US thing. She could be Cilia Black for all I could tell. She really occupies next to no space as an entity in my pop consciousness, despite a couple of great songs.

I am still upset that Neneh and Kelly C were put up against each other since they were the two best pop stars of everyone on that list. Perhaps one day this injustice will be overturned. And perhaps they will take the World Cup off Italy and give it to Zidane.
