Halfway through the year, it's time to rate the chart hits of sunny June. But as World Cup fever hits, there are more (rubbish) songs than ever in the list. Fairly warned be thee, says I...

Oh dear me this is a poor crop!

Isn't 'My My My' about a zillion years old? The way dahnce hits burst through to the charts years after they've been danced out will never cease disconcerting me, though I'd've thought AVH was already mainstream enough to avoid this.

Re-releases confuse me loads because 90% of the time they seem completely random.

It's totally over-the-top and mental. After the last line it kind of EXPLODES and she goes "LALALALALALALALALALALALALALALA" for ages and it is petrifying.

I'm not no red football
To be kicked around the garden
No no
I'm a red christmas-tree ball
And I'm fragile
I'm not no animal
Though I am to you
I'm not no crocodile
Like the one in Dublin Zoo
Who lived in a cage
the length and breadth of his body
When a window which people would look through
And throw coins on his back to taunt him
'though he couldn't move
Even if he wanted to

I'm not no animal in the zoo
I'm not no whipping boy for you
You may not treat me like you do
I'm not no animal in the zoo
My skin is not a football for you
My head is not a football for you
My body's not a football for you
My womb is not a football for you
My heart is not a football for you
I'm not no animal in the zoo
This animal will jump up and eat you
I'm not no animal in the zoo
And I've every intention
Of leaping up and getting you

The four-year national madness is really caught in stark relief here. Eek.

Thank God that version of "I Am The Music Man" didn't make the top 40. "I Am An England Fan", featuring one of the worst music videos ever.

The Morrissey record is the worst he's ever released.

Really? I kind of like it. Too much HDIF probably.

I think it's the way he seems to write his lyrics these days and just sing them over whatever tune's been written with no real attempt to make anything scan or fit. Probably he always did this and I just liked him too much to care.

(Madonna does it all over her new album too)

Ah, well I'm a very recent Morrissey listener so I have no point of comparison- I'd always hated that kind of music, back when I was into more agressive stuff, but lately I've been paddling in the pool of twee and liking what I've found. As such, I have only the most recent two Moz albums- should I be getting into his earlier stuff?

Date: 2006-07-05 01:01 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com
Well, I think they're better, and then his Smiths stuff is better still. Definitely if you like the recent stuff, shelling out for a Smiths best of (a fiver in Fopp I'd guess) would be a good idea!

The best actual Morrissey album is Vauxhall And I, from 1994, I think.

There's less of the homoerotic Mexican gangfight stuff on his older work though!

From: [identity profile] celentari.livejournal.com
But the homoerotic Mexican gangfights are what I love about him...

I already have a best of The Smiths but am less keen on them than solo Moz so far. Will try to get my grubby mitts on Vauxhall & I.

More pertinent question: how has someone who is clearly v rubbish managed to actually have many very good songs? Not, obviously, including this one.
From: [identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com
[livejournal.com profile] byebyepride bought it I believe!

The actual T&T song - "Fighter" by Maximus Dan - is 2006's best football song by a distance (NB have not heard the whole of C.Ronaldo's sister's effort)
From: [identity profile] bengraham.livejournal.com
Not true, there's a German hip-hop World Cup tune which is absolutely brilliant. The lyrics are all quite rude about Germany's rivals, but very very funny. I'll see if I can track down a copy of the song.
From: [identity profile] byebyepride.livejournal.com
I did. Since it's total rubbish and it's unlikely to lose sales now T&T are out of the w. c. I shall ysi it.

Who else enjoys the sheer wonder of Eat My Goal by Collapsed Lung? It is genius. Here Be Sample Lyrics (yes I know it's long, screw you):

Say Ho wo [ho wo] Say Eat my goal [eat my goal]
Say eat my goal [eat my goal]
Say Ho [ho] Say Ho wo [ho wo]
Say Eat my goal [eat my goal] Say eat my goal [eat my goal]

I know no woos
i know you're no fools
we're in love with the beautiful game with no shame
that's cool, true, but jump in the queue
complete time brothers with the peak time tools
can't hide caught offside down with the art and the pride
i know you got soul
i know you can eat my goal
cos us be a grand tue i've been told
in the nick of time, nick of time,
make a fine rhyme sick of mine
given up the possibility to resign
making out i know something you don't
making out you'd cope with a joke but you won't
admit to being a big tooth
spoon full of rapture, rhymes as it hits you
may or may not be amused
no ask me cos me plain bemused

Repeat chorus

looking for a saviour to save ya
from a lack of knowledge
this little fella won't get you through college
yeah knowledge is fine, but the party's mine
no no ask me about summer so
let everybody in the house say disco
got things to say all about having nothing to say
i never have my way
the new part team of mum won't move into ma home
to play sport and to forget to call their mums on the telephone
use some bass, lower the tone, lower the tone
don't ask me cos me not know
serious question spoken in a joke
and with the mind of a lesser spotted bloke
that won't make you choke

Repeat chorus

I bought said single. They did an Elastica cover once (labelmates innit)! Bloke out of said band is on a friend-of-friend's list.

Rest of their output = questionable. At least, the other couple of tracks I've got on Deceptive 50 are pretty bobbins.

Man, I just had a pang of nostalgia for ancient indie that was a bit rubbish (http://snow.prohosting.com/ukband/discography_Tys.htm).

I've only heard 10 of these, and can't remember half of those. From these results it seems as if you would judge me fortunate.

I'm sure I would love the Crazy Frog if I'd heard it.
