It's MONSTERS vs MINNOWS in the latest Now poll. In one corner, a huge wedge of the songs that made Poptimism great (and made 2003 the most exciting year EVER according to the demographics poll) (full results to follow) (ahem). In the other corner, a parade of horrors as reality pop turns horribly wrong. Plumb in the middle, "Cocks More Like" by the Coldplays.

Sugababes' "Round Round" topped Now 53 fairly easily, 4 votes ahead of Ms Dynamite: they also won the Now 52 tie-break, so good for them. Can they make it three Now polls in a row? No, is the short answer, because take a look at the competition...

Actually, good point. "C0cks" is their only bearable song that I can think of.

Kelly Rowland

Elsewhere I have stated that her forthcoming solo single 'Gotsta Go' (which is INCREDIBLE) is the first time that she's sounded like a viable solo artist, but no, I forgot about the v lovely indeed 'Dilemma' - she and Nelly are simply charming on it. Music box tinkling!

Anyway, yes, who has not heard 'Gotsta Go' yet? There are some fantastic "WO-OH! WO-OH!"s on it.

I hate it. It was seeing them 'performing' it on TOTP that put me off. They way CM exaggerated the rhythm as he pounded the piano and the hamfisted drumming and .... arrrgh

Also, Brandy made better use of the piano riff

Beyoncé's worst surely = 'Me Myself & I'!

I like the way she sings "me and my boyfriend".

Cross-eyed siblings

I actually like Daniel Bedingfield more than he deserves. I think somewhere along the line him and Natasha both got boffed on the head and acquired magical singing powers to the detriment of losing many brane cells.

Maybe.

I really can't hack Dilemma. It was the only bad song in Nelly's set when I saw him at Wembley.

Don't believe the hype

It was dreadful compared with ace pop gem listed above. Disappointing!

This really was a golden age of pop! There's a lot of dross but the stuff which isn't dross was just perfect - it sounds so confident.

I might quite possible feel the same way if I listened to commercial radio or watched TV. But having not had constant exposure to it, it's a bit less grating. CM is still a tw4t, though, no question.

B-b-b-but Natasha Bedingfield's voice sounds like a constipated cat! Honestly, I keep waiting for her to projectile vomit, the amount of HNNURRRRGHHHHEFFORT she puts into each note!

Yes people must totally hear 'Should I Go' by Brandy which samples the piano riff (ie the only bit of 'Cocksmorelike' which is any good - the rest is so much cotton wool) and put sit behind a lovely, hazy meditation on the dying stages of a relationship which doubles up as a farewell to the music industry from Brandy herself.

I like 'Me Myself & I' - the Panjabi MC remix in particular, but the original's definitely "any good at all" as well.

I never saw tATu at Eurovision but their MTV VMA performance was one of the most incredible spectacles I've ever seen - the one where they brought their own audience of Catholic schoolgirls, and stripped to a background of flashing newspaper headlines.

The first album is start-to-finish excellent, too. Second album has one (1) great song on it and a bunch of dodgy soft rock tracks. 'All The Things She Said' - no one has yet topped this in this decade yet!

Points of order

- Turin Brakes did have a good song, but this isn't it
- Massive Attack single was best thing off a substandard album, by no means bad but lacking any sort of pop bits like in eg Unfinished Sympathy/Protection
- I cried when I heard the Mock Turtles remix on the vodafone ad as it was a much loved song of Mine Youth and they had to go and ruin it.
- This was the year I was working at Island and saw Sugababes release an ace album/Kym Marsh get dropped like an stone/Busted go supernova from behind the scenes (ie YEAR OF ACE)
- Justin Timberlake is a v good dancer but not a v good singer
