Last week we reached consensus that Madge's ghey dancing anthem was the best #1 of 1990 with 40 ticks, narrowly beating Snap by 1 vote! But what about 40 years ago?

1966 was a GRATE year for pop singles, unlike 1967 and 1968 which were AWFUL.

I am a bit shocked tho at people NOT voting for the Four Tops - how can this be? Where is the Lex's dad when you need him?

Yeah, what's that about? It is probably in my top 10 of greatest singles, if I were the sort to go around making up lists.

Actually 1967 was great for singles, but you had to be in the USA to hear 'em. We had scads upon scads of garage bands where you only had the Troggs.

Number ones in USA, 1966:

Simon & Garfunkel "Sounds of Silence"
Beatles "We Can Work It Out"
Petula Clark "My Love"
Lou Christie "Lightnin' Strikes"
Nancy Sinatra "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'"
S/Sgt. Barry Sadler "The Ballad of the Green Berets"
Righteous Brothers "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration"
Young Rascals "Good Lovin'"
Mamas & the Papas "Monday Monday"
Percy Sledge "When a Man Loves a Woman"
Rolling Stones "Paint It, Black"
Beatles "Paperback Writer" (b/w "Rain")
Frank Sinatra "Strangers in the Night"
Tommy James & the Shondells "Hanky Panky"
Troggs "Wild Thing"
Lovin' Spoonful "Summer in the City"
Donovan "Sunshine Superman"
Supremes "You Can't Hurry Love"
Association "Cherish"
Four Tops "Reach Out I'll Be There"
? & the Mysterians "96 Tears"
Monkees "Last Train to Clarksville"
Johnny Rivers "Poor Side of Town"
Supremes "You Keep Me Hangin' On"
New Vaudeville Band "Winchester Cathedral"
Beach Boys "Good Vibrations"
Monkees "I'm a Believer" (b/w "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone")

Hah! Our Troggs number one is better than your Troggs number one.

(I can't think of a better year for pop music than 1966, though you have to bear in mind that I look back affectionately at 1966 as THE SECOND WORST YEAR OF MY LIFE, being edged out by the even more horrible 1965.)

We need to do a thread about the greatest songs ever with parentheses in their titles.

how come there was no poll on Poptimists yesterday?

we now risk three today what with new NOW! and Top402006 ones due.

it's a bit like Shredded Wheat.

There was meant to be a Now poll but some work came in. I'm planning to do it today but we can just have one on Thursday if needs be.

PWC is whenever I get the track - I now have a LEAD on this though so fingers crossed. But we can do a poll that day too, the PWC is more of a sloe burner.

Also: BEST B-SIDE EVER ALERT.

I refer, of course, to 'Rain'.

'Rain' = B-side to 'Paperback Writah'.

I think history's (and Poptimists') collective judgements are pretty on the money here - mild overrating of rub Small Faces single, and comments box hate for awesome Yellow Sub aside.

Also interesting to note

Did they have football in those days though? I don't know when football became popular, I have a feeling it was in the 80s.

'Yellow Submarine' is the most ghastly of an almost wholly ghastly back catalogue.

They didn't have football in the 19th century! They couldn't have. I've just realised I have NO IDEA when football became popular. George Best was in the 80s, right? Or 70s?

Natalie Cole and the moldering corpse of her father! (not an actual answer I know).

I have taken a Lexian attitude that Nancy Sinatra wasn't a proper Sinatra, because she was good.

When you have to sing "Yellow Submarine" at school, you develop a hatred of it.
