The Top 40 Singles poll for May saw the Pet Shop Boys and Hot Chip emerge as most popular hits with 'I'm With Stupid' and 'Boy From School' respectively, both accumulating 16 votes (but only 50% vote share) each. A gaggle of songs followed on 13 votes a piece.

Now the next Top 40 poll won't take place until the first Tuesday of July so in the meantime I am wondering, as we are now halfway through the year, what your favourite NON-TOP 40 tracks of the year so far are. Submit your choices (MAXIMUM OF THREE PLEASE) in the comments box and they will go into a poll next week, the results of which will combine with the existing Top 40 singles poll to assist us in establishing Poptimists most popular new songs of 2006. You had better believe this will be the most exhilirating experience of both yours and my life.

How did you hear it? Cos I reckon it will sound much less interesting when compressed to 192kps. This is big system music - the bass and the detail in the sound field are both v.important.

Pffft. Dance music does not necessarily equal pop music.

Anyway, OOB is still good on my discman, but it's amazing on a half-decent set up. The *sounds* they use are beautiful and in a muddy mp3 you completely lose that.

it's a given that dance music will sound better on a bigger, louder system tho isn't it?

i would apply that to ALL music tho, ultimately.

The *sounds* they use are beautiful and in a muddy mp3 you completely lose that.

it's just like two JPEGS of the same photo - one compressed more than other. of course the less compressed one looks better. but you can still get a good sense of what the photo represents from the more compressed one. so you can still judge the photo's artistic quality reasonably well on that basis.

i still haven't heard either 'OOB' or 'WBBB' yet and i really must.

You can get a good grasp of the form of the composition, yes, but you lose the detail. If the picture is in some way ABOUT the detail, then you miss an important part of it. It's not just sheen if the sheen is the point.

Plus anyway, low bit rate mp3s of bass intensive music is more like a b+w lo-res rendering of a huge brightly coloured photo than a slightly fuzzier JPEG.
