Top 40 Singles Of 2006 Poll #5: May

Well predictably Rihanna was beaten off in the end by crazy old Gnarls Barkley and his three more ticks. 'Crazy' got more ticks (27) than any other Top 40 single this year and 87.1% vote share, making it the most popular chart hit of the year among Poptimist members. Who says we're not in touch with Joe Still-Buys-CDs / £50 Mang?

And so now to cast your minds back...way back...to those heady days of May 2006...

[Poll #742857]

Total bafflement!

I've hijacked the office radio and put it on Radio 1 (it was on Magic) in the hope of hearing at least some of these. I wd have done your youtube thing yesterday but FM2006 got in the way.

I've not actually heard the Ultrabeat song I ticked either but I ticked it on trust cos "Feeling Fine" was so good.

I think when you factor in consistency of output, mass popularity, and pan-media playlist credibility the Red Hot Chilli Peppers are surely the worst band in the world.

They are usually dreadful yes but they can be listenable or at least ignorable in ways that have so far completely eluded Stereophonics, Oasis and Rhyming Slang Blunt!

OTM on both points actually. I was expecting to be underwhelmed by "Elysium (I Go Crazy)" but it's rather fine.

P.S. stern graph reminder. If youi can do this before you go on holiday I'd really appreciate it.

Christina Milian

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
I bought her album yesterday - it's terrific. 'So Amazin', which I assume is the next single, might be even better than 'Say I'!

I don't understand why some people aren't ticking her? She is the greatest living artist of our generation after all.

80% of the people who have ticked it so far also said 'Say I' is the best. So I'm guessing most indiemists haven't heard it yet.

Erm, because it's not actually that good? I mean, it's OK, but despite having seen the video three times over the weekend it hasn't stuck in my head at all.

which is everyone's favourite Busta Rhymes verse?

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
I assume everyone's heard the mental nine-minute mix with basically everyone of note in it (three-minute radio version not to be bothered with in comparison). I like Mary J Blige and Ne*Yo best!

I always liked Busta until the video for "Touch It", when I was suddenly overwhelmed with a desire to punch him repeatedly in his big face.

Is it me or do they announce Sean Paul in the video and then never have a verse from him?

I heard a version without the sirens in it and it was lame.

important proper indie point

that bloke off of panic! at the disco sounds JUST LIKE martin rossiter from them genes.

preston and sov are going to win this aren't they?

Re: important proper indie point

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
I hope not! It is a TERRIBLE version.

Re: important proper indie point

[identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
The single mix is a bit rubbish compared to the original remix though (which I think still features in the video) - it's almost all Preston and no Lady Sov in the new version, think she is effectively just doing backing vox. I was almost tempted not to vote for this in protest.

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ultrabeat = disappointing.

Am liking LL Cool J and J-Lo more the more I listen to it.

"You got, you got, you got what it takes to make me leave my man."

Ahem.

REJECT THIS MAN AND ALL HIS WORKS*.

*except maybe a couple of the singles off White Blood Cells.

May was a great month for singles IMO.

I love: Raconteurs, RHCP, Feeder (their best ever single, I reckon), We Are Scientists, Delays, Sigur Ros, Hot Chip.

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
We should just rename this place Feedermists.

[identity profile] miss-newham.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I am very confused by the Chicane/Tom Jones single (currently playing every ten minutes on Radio 2) because it doesn't sound like Tom Jones' voice at all. Can anyone explain this to me?
(deleted comment)

[identity profile] zenith.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Does that Sigur Ros track sound totally different to their previous material, or do we need to change the name of this community?

[identity profile] miss-newham.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It is on the telly, therefore pop, surely!

Well Hung

[identity profile] anthonyeaston.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
What is the general english view of will young, because i really love him--clever, sincere, with a fantastic voice, and a kind of yearning desire, but im sure hes mocked across the pond, am i wrong?

Re: Well Hung

(Anonymous) 2006-06-06 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
sort of. he is taken relatively seriously for a 'reality pop' winner and Cowell product. it also helps that he has terrific videos - well that just helps people like me i think (we start to associate him with great videos as opposed to the music we're less keen on generally). i think his fanbase breaks down like this:

31% 40+ mums and grannies
22% 40+ gay men
19% popist-yet-rockist types working in the media e.g. 'Dr' Fox
11% younger gay men
10% straight, 'true' poptimists
7% kids

but it might be wrong to distinguish 'gay audience' in this respect as i'm not sure he's really held up as a gay icon, despite the 'Switch It On' video - unless perhaps a modern mainstream model with stereotypical traits less in-yer-face. but it seems more irrelevant with him than people before him in a similar position (e.g. George Michael post-Wham).
