OMG in Now 49 we had...a DRAW! And a draw of two songs with great big ticky ratings at that! And poor old "Survivor" one point behind, with a score that would have walked 9 out of the last 10 polls. I feel as overexcited as Davina pretending a phone vote is close! Make yr choice between S Club and Outkast after you've voted in THIS Now poll, which kicks off with perhaps the iconic modern pop song and has a host of other 'talking points' - I expect plenty of Lexular squealing and much HEATED debate. Debut tracks from Sophie E-B, Five (late in the game!), Alihen Ant Farm, So Solid and a couple of French robots you may be familiar with...

EDIT: And how could I forget THE MOST ROMANTIC SONG EVER MADE?

If by "this" you mean "three or four years later, with lots of amazing work like NORE's 'Nothin' in between", then I agree.

Actually I think it was the same time, but there was still lots of good stuff to come e.g. JUSTIN!

i agree Neptunes never really did anything 'wow!' enough for Justin but 'Rock Your Body' and 'Senorita' are v nice anyway.

I just love your...brain

I still prefer the original of 'Like I Love You' - actually if I had to call anything "generic Neptunes" it would be this, or 'Rock Your Body' (the production is the least interesting thing about both).

Also Justin was SO. FUCKING. FIT back then.

'Cry Me A River' is Timbaland anyway...

NONSENSE!

Brit's second best single ever, easy, and her bast banger. It's ASTONISHING. How can you hate it?!

Yes but that doesn't mean they're better - in fact I have no idea why 'Toxic' does as it's almost impossible to dance to.

I like Britney's vox on 'Slave' a lot better than the other two.

Toxic v easy to dance to, as much as No Good Advice or whatever really.

'I'm A Slave 4 U' vox over Fatboy Slim's 'You're Not From Brighton' is one of my better mash-ups you know...

'Toxic' has a very stuttery, stop-starty beat which doesn't really flow in a physical way - 'No Good Advice' settles into a completely basic groove immediately!

the flow of 'Toxic' is for the listener to assume tho. listen to the beats that AREN'T there etc. - tempo wise it's about the same as 'No Good Advice' hence comparison

Perhaps due for re-appraisal. I just remember being terribly, terribly disappointed by the song at the time, and the "Slave 4 U" attempts to conjure up Prince greatness in our heads kind of pathetic. I liked 'Boys' much better.

I always thought it was lodged in the Britney canon as one of the most weirdly abstract, forward-thinking, bonkers and incredible things she'd ever done - I didn't realise people disliked it!

'Boys' great too - both the album version and the single version.

It was exciting because with the exception of 'Girlfriend' which came out just before this I think this was Neptunes entering pop territory and it did actually feel quite experimental for both them and a hip-pop track - weird, ethereal sounds and this vaguely tribal beat and of course quite minimal. Novel and thrilling in that respect. And still kinda sexy, in spite of Britney's bad breath.

i love that Rishi Rich remix of 'Me Against The Music' tho. i had to ask the karaoke women in the Pint Pot what it was once after she played it at the end of the night.

But it doesn't sound like any other Neps productions at all! It doesn't even sound like a facsimile of what they did - it's much busier, treblier. In fact I think it's the most Timbaland-esque of their productions (and Timbaland >>> Neps)
