Poptimism Podcast

I am DOING this! But note no downloads/mp3s in there yet, but if you subscribe now, i very much hope to have something on there tomorrow morning - and hopefully more than a proof of concept - PROPER CHOONS.

Apart from anything else it should mean i take time to listen to all the YSIs dotted around here. If anyone has any submissions they want to e-mail then send em to poptimism.podcast@googlemail.com, i will also be downloading YSIs.

Trouble is I my "poptimist gatekeeper" rating is quite low, so if I'm overwhelmed with choice (which I think i am already) then my choices may be erratic. I think only 6 mins (10 at the very max) a week would be what i'd want to hear - cutting down tracks to the "most typical minute".

Feel free to point me at YSIs in the comments below, e-mail as above, and if you want to stress the "typical minute" do do so, or I'll take the first minute, unless I too get absorbed into the song and can make my own mind up from the first play!

Another future issue might be that of bandwidth - but that's something we can address if it becomes popular.

Just to brand the podcast I intend to start each one with freakytrigger's address, it'll be 2-3 seconds max.

I have put up "podcast zero" with the tracks i had to hand - a "proof of concept" if you like to talk that way. From next week I like to think that we'd have slightly shorter extracts of a few more songs. We should also have a couple of "catch ups" of stuff that's been talking about over the last month or so. (eg I still haven't heard Promiscuous Girl!)

I've subscribed. Perhaps get it listed on iTunes... surely that will make it easier to keep track of the number of subscribers and the popularity of podcast?

possibly - a bit skittish of putting something of dubious copyright onto iTunes. we can measure weekly downloads of the mp3s from the server requests tho.

i wouldn't worry about it - this is totally experimental. a big part of me tells me that it is wrong headed - i agree with the people on the other thread who summised that they'd want the whole mp3s anyway.

my hope is that a "digest" of many songs will lead people to pursue the whole mp3 that caatches their ears. i did think that we could put just a whole mp3 on it per day, or every other day, but i think that would miss this trick - the lazy digest/overview.

But, fwiw, let me just go on record (again?) against the excerpts idea. I would MUCH rather have ten minutes (e.g.) of three full songs than 10 clips.

if we did that, it would be one full song per day, which is just a way to automate the YSI trawl indiscriminately. while we COULD do that, I think that from a bandwidth point of view it would prove draining.

The idea of doing this podcast AS WELL AS having people post YSIs, e-mail to gmail accts etc is to add on this digest for the lazy. i count myself among them - though ironically getting this done will negate my need for it.

Oooh, yeah, stick some Lily Allen up there... all I've heard so far is 'London' and I'm intrigued to hear more.

BTW, I never commented on the previous post, but I'm in favour of lots of excerpts over complete songs. Aside from the fact that it makes you less likely to face legal consequences, it will allow you to cover a much wider range of tracks in the same time period. Moreover, as you said elsewhere in this post, the idea should be that people here a clip of something, are intrigued to find out more and end up going out to buy the record!
