The most-requested canon ever - with Brit riding high in the Now Polls it seems a good time to overview her curious career. You get SIX picks so choose wisely.
The Neptunes ones are amazing! I think the third album, Britney, is possibly the best pop album-as-album EVER. It's amazingly well-sequenced and internally coherent - the Maxpop and Nepspop sit alongside each other v well; it's forward-thinking and completely insane; it was a really effective statement of reinvention
"Slave 4 U" was the moment when I thought, right, the Neptunes have lost it: not that it was bad (though I've liked it less and less since, give or take a couple of good dancefloor moments) but it didn't surprise me at all. And I've always preferred Britney sounding pouty-melodramatic to Britney sounding sexxay, too. Though I think Britney is quite sexy.
I think she's GREAT when she's sexxay - her voice is uber-breathy anyway, so if the lyrics and production and vocal performance don't mesh perfectly her more melodramatic moments can sound strained (admittedly they mesh v often - BTMYH!), but it's been ridiculously over the years to just turn her weird robo-voice into another sexxx-noise ('Showdown' and 'Breathe On Me' do this superlatively on ITZ)
