i watched the eurovision schedule-filler that was on last night and when daz performed at the end i thought it was just about the best eurovision entry i can remember in ages.

but i liked "cry baby" so who cares

i'm mystified by the love for Daz. i thought this was appalling when i heard it on Popworld. i'm having the usual trouble seeing the love for this as un-ironic i'm afraid.

ah i had forgotten to factor in entertainment value of Daz + schoolgirls spectacle at Eurovision. this will probably be a lot more fun than previous UK performances yes (unless laughing at Jemini counts).

The entertainment factor isn't a big deal for me - there'll be some Austrian flinging a stuffed buzzard around that will upstage our boy Daz. But I honestly can't seem to get enough of the song - as with his Bus Stop tracks I really love the way he raps. The dare-you-to-tell-me-I'm-not-serious absurdist sincerity is a possible sticking point, as is the passing resemblance to the Black Eyed Peas, but for me he's negotiated both of those hurdles.

Gettin' a bit bored of Daz now (loved the song first time I heard it), so am looking forward to discovering some other Eurovision entry to get behind.

i can't see beyond the 'this-is-terrible-rapping' aspect. if anything it's the schoolgirl chorus hook that comes off as borderline-endearing for me - that's the stronger part of the song. i will think on about my attitude to 'comedy rapping' which is surely what Daz qualifies under whether he thinks so or not.

But what is it about Daz himself? There's something compellingly awkward about him. He looks too old and he can't dance and I get the feeling that he can't really believe that he gets to be on the telly.

When he was being all "I'm in it to win it" last night he looked weirdly convinced and unconvinced, like he is some standard issue shy bloke who's been hypnotised to believe he'll win Eurovision, but who doesn't have the muscle memory of looking persuasively confident.

Has he made records before? What are "his bus stop tracks"?

I don't think it's terrible rapping at all! I think it's basic rapping, and obviously he lacks technique and only works over a pretty simple beat, but the boat went out for "proficiency" as a yardstick for judging musical effects 30+ years ago surely?

I'm not sure he's 32 either.

He used to be the rapper/producer for Bus Stop, who specialised in remakes of old 70s and 80s records. They did the hit version of "Kung Fu Fighting" in 1998 (on which Daz is magnificent), and "You Ain't Seen Nothin Yet".

He also was half of Rikki and Daz, who did a version of "Rhinestone Cowboy", though I don't remember hearing that.

i think it's ok rapping. there's some rythmn within the lines that works, and his weird british bloke rapping is endearing (i think tom said that bit already)

There are quite a few goodies this year. The German one in particular is surprisingly good, especially considering it's country (although being Eurovision, and the fact that the singer is a music professor, it's all very *knowing* country. With a magnificent key change).
