The round of 16 reaches its end with its final two matches. France stormed their group and now face underperforming Spain for a Japanese showdown. And the draw has opened right up for minnows Togo and Ukraine, one of whom will be facing Brazil's conquerors the Czech Republic in the quarters. Who wins? YOU DECIDE.

All tracks are available at http://www.freakytrigger.co.uk/popworldcup/ - if there are any problems let me know in the comments.

France:

Christie Laume - "Agathe Ou Christie": Enthusiastic boss [livejournal.com profile] atommickbrane told us "Skipping through the foopball fields, occasionally pausing to sniff the odd daisy and ponder how the stars in the sky sont tres jolie, the lovely CHRISTIE LAUME steps up to flex her mighty p!o!p! muscles in time for MATCH DEUX! Gasp! as Christie weaves nimbly around the PUNY DEFENCES! Goggle! as the drummers BISH BOSH WIZ whammo in the back of the nett! WONDER! why on earth they keep playing the SYMPHONIC GONG! Agatha Christie in her role as CONSULTANT POP-CRIT-MUSE features on tippy-tappy music-hall organ! The French team have been a BLUR on the pitch throughout GIN addled training sessions (THAT AGATHA I ask you), and the Management is confident that our shiny pop will see the French team win through in time to make it back to le cafe before the still exuberant Saian Supa Crew hav drunk all the FIZZ"

Spain:

Silicone Transpirante - "Objetivo Muy Discreto": Boshing gaffer [livejournal.com profile] katstevens let us know that "Hailing from the scorching desert city of Madríd, ex-Petra De Fenetra cohorts Silicone Transpirate are refusing to take prisoners! Feel the fuego as the pelting pace of power punk anthem A Very Discreet Objective rouses a consciousness and infects your very hardcore soul! And don't forget the Salsa. The time is haste and the Dead Kennedys (with whom play live in "Los conciertos de radio 3-rne") are well and truly ALIVE in their spirits! Two years touring supporting bands like 37 Hostias, Commando 9mm, Hamlet, Mama Ladilla...etc. they recorded two albums "sILIcOne"(2002) AND "fIRE kId"(2003), HIS NEW ALBUM OUT SOOOOONNNNN..."

Ukraine:

Philip Glass v Dizzee Rascal - "Stand Up Dance": Maverick supremo [livejournal.com profile] juror8 said "If you went out into your local high street and vox popped 100 people with the question "Which one person most defines the term "pop music?", 97 of them will answer "Philip Glass". That's just a fact. Anyway, thankfully Big Phil has never been afraid to rep for his Ukrainian heritage (or at least various random internet blogs haven't been afraid to mention it), so here he teams up with one of the players cruelly left out from the England team, Dizzee Rascal, in what can only be described as a Freddy Adu-esque case of dollar-chasing.

Anyway, Glass brings the strings, Raskit brings the strained vocals, the production style can best be described as "RZAtastic", and, to be honest, the other option I had for a musician of Ukrainian heritage was Bob Dylan."

Togo:

Manu DiBango ft Bella Bellow - "Dasiko": Easy-going manager [livejournal.com profile] stevem78 let on that "We may not know much about Ukraine but we know that after the thrills n' spills of the first round it's time to get serious. Now we are professional and want to show the world what else we can do. We believe that beauty takes many faces and our mission is to mesmerise both the people and the opposition into submission. Watch us weave our second-round spell and hopefully you will see what we see, feel what we feel, and believe what we know to be true."

So how will these matches be resolved?

For each match you have 10 points to allocate, and can allocate some or all to either team, according to how good you think their entry is. Please don't allocate more or less than 10!

This week we're having two matches on one poll - but remember these matches are SEPARATE, you are rating France only against Spain, and Togo only against Ukraine. If you only want to vote in one match, that's OK.

Fill in the vote in the text poll below or send your scores to freakytrigger@gmail.com.

Score format: "France - 5. Spain - 5. Ukraine - 5. Togo - 5." (with the 5s replaced by your own scores)

[Poll #725622]

Deadline for this round is NOON ON FRIDAY, and on Monday the first TWO quarter-finals will take place (England v Portugal; Trinidad and Tobago v Iran) so I'll need MP3s for those next weekend.

Vote away!

I'm honoured to have been asked to scout for one of the four nations here, and naturally even more chuffed that my discovery has been thrust Walcott-like straight into the line-up. Will this affect my vote though?

Ukrainian fans leave the stadium to riot after the coach leaves all the local players at home in Kiev and fields the child of (ahem) Lithuanian emigrants. First Milan buys Shevchenko and now this! Russians cackle while underdogs Togo gain heart...

And a bunch of others found on Google. In fact, more sources than claim he's Lithuanian. I cry foul play at this attempt to cast aspersions on my team's legitimacy.

Artistopia sources (copies) wikipedia, but wikipedia itself says Lithuania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Glass). Not that wiki in infallible, of course, but my guess is most of the "more sources" are just the result of the same text being copied and pasted all over the place.

Go Togo!

This quibbling is a side-issue.

The U + K question must be: wouldn't a Ruslana B-side have stood a better chance than this mess?

Hahahahah I have just remembered the existence of GONG. Arf!

Due to my messy eating habits my desk is covered in bits of chocolate pastry that has a Slightly French Name. I HOPE YR HAPPY.

I JUDGE THAT...

France's faintly twee play and ever-oafish rhymeshapes never quite held the game against Spain's raw witty speed; meanwhile Ukraine's various outrageous ringers, which certainly seemed to deserve a medal for shameless cheek, were ultimately no match for Togo's great Cameroonian coach Dibango, whose mastery of every afro style over 30+ years, helped a bold if untried ACTUALLY TOGAN side to smooth victory...

The Spanish track reminds me of Argentinian rock bands like Fabulosos Cadillacs and Bersuit, only a lot more no-nonsense.

Frankly the little giggle that Laume gives midway through her song is worthy of any Poptimistic trophy. I Les Bles for the Golden Boot if nothing else.

I like it when the Spain track goes a bit...proggy...later on...mind you...

And I also enjoy the orchestral stylings of Mr "jost an evening?" Glass and who knew about Dizzee's hard upbringing on the backstreets of Kiev?

But of course there can only be two winners.

the Togo track definitely rewards repeat plays. An intriguing mix of cocktail lounge jazz and afro-beat. Especially love the guitar.

Everything here is terrific! Dizzee is weirdly almost the weak link on that Ukraine track, I think I need some Philip Glass records.
