I've noticed that the canon polls keep creeping back to their spiritual home of Fridays - it must be fate! Anyway today in a fit of indulgence we are doing the BEATLES, to celebrate the fact that something written by me about them is going to be in a proper book available in real actual shops later this year. I think this could be one of the most interesting canons, purely because everyone has different favourites.... my top picks were Back In The USSR and Day Tripper/Ticket To Ride, but clearly just looking at how even the scores are (at this early stage), this is going to be a close one.

I doubt if the last three will get many votes, mind.

Technically, should the canon not have included other Beatles-linked songs (like the Joy Division/New Order canon)? I think this poll would have been far more entertaining if it had included singles like Jet, Band On The Run, My Sweet Lord, Champagne Supernova etc.

The Pop opinion seems to be that the upbeat post-Mersey mid-period stuff is the finest, then the early funny stuff, with the later hippie stuff coming firmly third and the last-gasp/cash-in material obviously last.

This makes sense though I think some singles are getting a Bum Deal here, esp Lady Madge.

i can't really separate them from being a small kid and my mum and dad young and in love and being fans --- i can remember watching news report of their break-up by myself, except the news visuals i remember going with the report are of an unpeopled fire escape, which in retrospect seems a bit unlikely

What I find interesting is that if you just looked at this poll, they really look kind of so-so. Put them head to head against Madonna, strongest to weakest, and they'd come out looking like the Candy Skins. It's only when you go deep in their catalog that the brilliance really shows.
