Now then, the last couple of Nows have been described - perhaps rightly - as the "worst ever". Could the series turn the corner as it headed into 1998? The answer is a mighty YES IT COULD - this Now is a MONSTER: whether you love or hate the records here you'll probably find it contains stacks more memorable pop than recent polls.

So - pausing only to inaugurate Gala's "Freed From Desire" into the Pop n Poll Hall of Fame - I'll leave it to you.

[Poll #715994]

Can Now 40 follow that? Well...no. But it can have a very good go.

(Pop World Cup match to appear tomorrow, by the way)

Yes, CFTM is the track of hers that I liked (a lot) despite myself. I can't believe though that this was the best-selling single of hte 90s in the US.

Your skepticism is probably justified. On the one hand, the CMT (Country Music Television) LeAnn bio claims that, at the time, "How Do I Live" was the best-selling single in history, which I really doubt. But for '90s songs in the U.S., Wikipedia has it behind "Candle in the Wind," "I Will Always Love You," "Macarena," and "Whoop There It Is" (not necessarily in that order; they list alphabetically by the millions, so "Candle" sold over 10 million, the next three over 4 million, and "How Do I Live" over 3 million along w/ "Gangsta's Paradise" and "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)."

"How Do I Live" benefited from being interpretable in a couple of different ways, so that the "you" could be God or could be her boyfriend/lover/husband - I think the song was simultaneously on an inspirational album and a soundtrack album, and then got multiple dance mixes. I've got it on an MTV Party to Go compilation, sandwiched between Jennifer Paige's "Crush" and Amber's "Sexual," neither of which are generally interpreted as referring to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

That compilation (MTV Party To Go 2000)is terrific, by the way: has "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)," *NSync's "Here We Go," Joey McIntire's "Stay the Same," Steps' "5,6,7,8," Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody," Monica's "First Night," Before Dark's "Come Correct," and 702's "Where My Girls At?" among others. "How Do I Live" was only the second-best "How Do I" track, surpassed by Jennifer Love Hewitt's "How Do I Deal."
