Now then, the last couple of Nows have been described - perhaps rightly - as the "worst ever". Could the series turn the corner as it headed into 1998? The answer is a mighty YES IT COULD - this Now is a MONSTER: whether you love or hate the records here you'll probably find it contains stacks more memorable pop than recent polls.

So - pausing only to inaugurate Gala's "Freed From Desire" into the Pop n Poll Hall of Fame - I'll leave it to you.

[Poll #715994]

Can Now 40 follow that? Well...no. But it can have a very good go.

(Pop World Cup match to appear tomorrow, by the way)

Some ace breakdancing in the video.

See also Xtina & Lil Kim in that song where the girls and boys are having beef in the street cos Xtina is wearing purple pants.

I luv Xtina so much.

You may hear me say this again and at length when she finally makes an appearance on a Now poll.

Xtina wins.

Since she stopped mucking about singing dreary teen pop and has actually let rip with some stomping belters I have enjoyed her musical output+++. Britney on the other hand is still rather annoying, but luckily for her has had some cracking songs written for her.

I luv them both unreservedly and whole-heartedly. I like that they stagger their albums, every time one of them releases a sequence of singles I think "aha! she has won! take that, Britney/Xtina!" And then the other one comes back the following year and trumps it, and so on and so on until they just BEAT MUSIC.

That video is SO UGLY! The first time I heard 'can't hold us down' on the radio I was amazed to find it a good song, the eyebleed colours of the video had confused my brane.

I love that video! I think Xtina looks GREAT in it. She looks really happy! The collected videos of Stripped are, I think, the greatest body of art that this century has produced so far.

She does look weird. But it's Xtina. She *always* looks weird!

the 'Dirrty' video is pretty ugly too - she reminds me of THE PREDATOR in it.

she looks wonderful in the 'Fighter' video tho. unfortunately this means i am clearly an goff.

Yes yes but the point and the reason why the 'Dirrty' video is the best of the century so far is precisely that she looks ugly! SUBVERTING MALE GAZE XTINA AS RADICAL FEMINIST &C

I think she looks amazing in the Drrrty video! that dirty roots/grease/beds of sweat thing is so powerful, it's k-hot. She looks best in the 'voice within' video even if it is just like that evanescence one with the rooftops or something.

BEADS of sweat, even.

The fighter video is pretty but it doesn't interest me so much, dunno why.

cos it's not trying to do anything other than look pretty perhaps. it's basically just a fashion show.
