This is the very last solo cd Shine Compilation! Clearly whoever commissioned this thought the mix of horrifying Dadrock in the forms of not only the Uproar, the DULLER Scene, the Wasis AND the SMOKIN' MOJO FILTERS (as seen on a Now poll near you!) and the obligatory Marion/Longpigs two-parter was such a winner that Shine 5 promises you a MASSIVE 40 tracks - some of them are even GRATE! But before we get to that, on with Shine 4. Tellingly, the first time I tried to submit this poll, LJ went down and I had to go out and get a sandwich! LJ can't take the Dark Therapy!!!

[Poll #714289]

*SURELY SOME MISHTAKE...

I quite like several songs by The Lighties as they are really called.

Otherwise this is grim fare.

I don't remember anything by Marion.

I barely remember Marion!

There are lots of songs here which FOOLS say are good, eg "Just".

In fact I don't remember Marion AT ALL, as when I tried to all I could think of was Pete's Marion, who as far as I know has never sung an britpop song.

The most irritating thing about these polls is that in amongst the WORST MUSIC EVAH there are consistently about two that I genuinely like! and they feel sullied by their proximity to eg smokin mojo filters, cast, oasis!

It also means that I can't have the satisfaction of ticking STICK IT UP YER BUM or whatever the last one gets called.

yes, and not ticking that sweeping dismissal feels like I am giving some kind of overall approval to the compilations in general, WHICH I AM NOT!

MARIONG!!!!

this is so far and away their best song, although CLEARLY should be followed by the other longpigs song, ie SHE SAID for proper alt.disco flapping about.

I went to see Mariong at the Astoria many years ago. I liked the one that went on about GOING OUT on the RAZZLE. Is that one of these?

Skin from Skunk Anansie: she had an amazing voice, I wish she had put it to better use (I think she did eventually get round to doing some tracks with Ed case in the end but it was TOO LATE) (nb I do think Skunk Anansie had several great songs! inc this one)

Who is Ian Broudie anyway? I ticked the HOUNDS OF DEATH option as I know he's not in the Cardigans or Dubstar and they're the only people in this I wouldn't inflict HOUNDS OF DEATH on.

'Fade Away' is the worst Oasis song of the 90s on it's own terms i.e. not marred by airplay saturation etc. ala Wunderball, Tell Sally That Slag Can Wait etc.

I have the Number One Cup song on CD Single. Though, I prefer it with the sitar intro on the album.

I remember that Melody Maker gave away this chart like the kind you used to get in Shoot!, a league table of indie no-marks! You could follow the success of your favourite bands! No wonder the Melody Maker went under.
