The Pop World Cup Round of 16
Ivory Coast 1 PORTUGAL 2 (after extra time)

A shock last-minute goal sent Portugal through to face England in the Pop World Cup quarter-finals. The Ivory Coast looked to have taken the game to penalties but a final attack in numbers by the young Portugese saw the ball trickle across the line after a goalmouth scramble. Luck was not with the African team - they dominated the extra time play against a tired Portugese side and saw a shot hit the crossbar minutes before the decisive final goal. Disappointed manager [livejournal.com profile] poptasticuk was unavailable for comment but a source in the Ivory Coast camp told us, "We're all gutted. That was more like 130 minutes than 120 - I'm not going to tell the ref how to do his job but I suggest he takes a few lessons in timekeeping before taking charge of a match again."

"Fonzie we love you"

The Portugese fans meanwhile were chanting [livejournal.com profile] thebopkids name last night, and a Portugal spokesman dismissed rumours that the manager is swiftly running out of fit players. "It was a tough game, of course, they all are at this level. But we have every chance of a result against England. These comments the boss is supposed to have made - they were translated poorly, that's all."

I would like to pay tribute to the resilience and sense of fair play of my opponents, especially their unusually groovy strips.

We're just glad to be here at this stage, on this stage.

Time to regroup and focus the variously brilliant musical minds of the squad on the next round. Which England will turn up? And which Portugal will they play?
