Now 35, and we're still deep in the heart of 1996, a year I didn't much enjoy on any level, and this compilation isn't exactly beckoning me back to it. The Spice Girls ended up equal second on Now 34, tying with Underworld and two votes behind shoXoR winner Gina G: they get another go this time, as do all-conquering Pulp (with an BALLAD). Beyond that....well, I'll save my fingers for the comments boxes.

There are a lot of songs which seem to be second/third singles from bands who were classic for other songs entirely. I didn't even KNOW about this Livin' Joy one.

Someone please explain the Deep Blue Something hate.

Oh my god Dom it's TERRIBLE! Smug and stodgy and with this awful veneer of 'manliness' to it, it encapsulates a particularly noxious strain of US MOR for me. I've never heard the Dave Matthews Band but this is what I imagine they sound like.

Nearly fucking ruins a great book/film, too. Audrey would turn in her grave, and as for Capote...

I can't believe Pulp are doing so well! PULP FANBOYS REMOVE BLINKERS PLEASE, 'Something Changed' has no tune and certainly no zinging synths on a par with 'Say You'll Be There'.

I always end up singing 'My Favourite Game' by The Cardigans whenever I try to think of it, and vice versa.

If "Beautiful Ones" comes up on the rails to steal this, I may actually dance around my room.

So far, SEVEN poptimists - over half at this point! - have named a Britpop guitar song as their favourite.

STOP IT DO YOU WANT TO MAKE ME CRY????

Why even bother singing about all of that if you're going to set your lyrics to sodding BRITPOP STODGY GUITARS?????
