Pop World Cup Round of 16

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO 2 Ecuador 0

Trinidad kept their Pop World Cup dreams alive with a sparsely-attended win over minnows Ecuador. The Caribbean side had been made to work in the first half but after the break their style and attacking commitment paid off with two fine goals, the first coming on the counter after Ecuador's best chance of the game. Some commentators have suggested that the draw has been kind to Trinidad but that shouldn't detract from [livejournal.com profile] jel_bugle's achievement in taking the team to the quarter-finals. His squad played an up-tempo game, applying familiar tactics with a crude gusto, but they still had too much quality for a tentative Ecuador.

A small Ecuador fan protests an offside decision

[livejournal.com profile] skillextric's side played well but seemed maybe overwhelmed by the occasion, and the unpredictable passing moves that had made them Group A's surprise package were replaced by a more cautious game. They found themselves unable to turn their few good chances into goals, though will have few regrets overall after a campaign more successful than many predicted. Their conquerors will face either Iran or Serbia and Montenegro for a place in the semis.

I love synthdie. How could I not, as it ties together my two favourite genres, twee/indie pop and electronic (*proper*) pop.
(Postal service are still rub though)

I thought this was a pretty drab game, in all honesty - Trinidad & Tobago's safe and predictable tactics didn't do justice to their performance in the group stage and Equador struggled to get beyond the half way line. The punters are voting with their feet.

I told the lads at half-time that if they wanted to lose to Ecuador's version of the Postal Service* then it was up to them, just don't bother coming back to the team hotel.

*smiley

Ecuador had an interesting concept, and they reminded me more of the Pet Shop Boys than the Postal Service, though perhaps this is owing to my never having heard the Postal Service. Also didn't think Ecuador were within miles (or even more km's) of being as good as the Pet Shop Boys, but that's a different issue. Nice try, good game, weak teams but these games aren't about strength, are they?

For the record, I would probably have scored it 6-4 to T&T if I'd been around for this match.
