The History Of Pop Part 34 aka We got G like MC who Likes It On An E

The poorly-received Now 33 throws up a winner in the form of Terrorvision Pulp - but only by one vote this time from Saint Etienne, then Luniz-Lush-Dubstar in that order. Much anger aimed at Wasis and Cast, and the best Radiohead song seems to be "Just", which is a bit of a shocker.

And now it's ALL CHANGE on Now 34 - this is the first Now that feels 'modern' to me, except I suppose it doesn't now, as the 'era' (in my head) that "Wannabe" kicked off came to an end...when? Well that's another question. Meanwhile - first Spices! first solo Robbie! Peter Andre! Underworld! 2Pac! The riotous return of the do-you-see track sequencer! AND LOTS MORE! Including some real stinkers too, naturally.

is this not the 4/4 'Dex & Jonesey' mix of 'Higher State...', i.e. not the one with the increased bonkers frequency mentalism? still quite good if it is tho

I've never actually believed in a Spice Girls era so much as a return to normal service after Britpop. Of course the fact that I'm not too fond of the song probably affects this.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think someone from The Hits (or poss TMF) must be following Poptimists, there was a programme on saturday which played pretty much all the great stuff off this Now, which means my enthusiasm runneth rampant for Gina G, 2Pac, Robert Miles, Spice Girls et al right now.

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw that also, during my 6-hour HITS marathon on Sat...

I only voted for Josh Wink cause the video was ACE.

MONDAY THEORY

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
videos for 90s Trance songs MUST have at least 1x girl carrying suitcase being chased by someone in dark glasses.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
wow I thought 'wannabe' would WALK it and I certainly did not pick Wink as the early leader!

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
ALSO for those who are interested Mark Morrison is on the COMEBACK TRAIL, my friend Sophie did an interview with him and it is here (http://arts.guardian.co.uk/features/story/0,,1726015,00.html).

The success of OMC is possibly the only good thing to come from the release of "Odelay".

SLIGHT RETURN IS THE BEST EVER BRITPOP SONG

[identity profile] juror8.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You know it's true.

Re: SLIGHT RETURN IS THE BEST EVER BRITPOP SONG

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
no the best Britpop songs are all by GURLS (Single Girl, Dark Therapy, Line Up etc.)

unless it's not Britpop if it's a girl singing, which i am prepared to consider.

Totally unrelated but

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Werk database has just come up with an utter classic:

Registered Title: RUNNING UP THAT HILL
Performers : STEVE,COOGAN
Instrumentation : SONG
CA : BUSH KATE (BUSH CATHERINE)

AHahahahahahahahha!

Re: Totally unrelated but

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
is this to do with the Kate Bush medley Coogan did as Alan Partridge for Comic Relief one year?

[identity profile] mostlyconnect.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
This feels like the first modern NOW to me too, somehow. Is there really a post-spice era? If this is the first modern now, then there can't be as it wouldn't have time to happen maybe?

Let's discuss how bad Ocean Colour Scene actually were as well.

Indeed.

more importantly, the 6 people who have not votes for wannabe should be KICKED OFF THE GROUP IMMEDIATELY ;)

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I find it confusing that 'Wannabe' and 'California Love' are really not even close to winning!

a roofdog, he speke

This is more like it, about the only thing Suggs ever did that I can stand listening to (and it's a cover, no surprises there) and my Grandad's cover of the Mission Impossible theme, but what is all this Suede-love ? Dere God, even I can't stand Suede.

ATTN CIS

Badly, truly horrifyingly. Quite unnecessarily jaunty.

flippin eck, how can Gina G be winning? over the Spice Girls???!

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
it is indeed a curious result - I imagined Spice Girls and 2pac tied for ages, fighting to be the winner. And they are tied. But there are two records way ahead of them which I would not have picked AT ALL! (I like all four songs involved but like Tom cannot fathom how anyone would not tick 'California Love')

[identity profile] cis.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
OMD's 'walking on the milky way'! I loved that song!

I stopped buying NOWs with this one == I was clearly an mental as it is wonderful! Though, cor, I totally thot the spice girls were later.

[identity profile] mostlyconnect.livejournal.com 2006-04-03 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
you think everything is later! this has been established by science.
