The Friday Canon: BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT

It's the Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber canon!

I'd be the first to concede that ALW and his henchmen have been responsible for a great deal of wank. But they've also brought us some fantastic POP and this is what the Friday Canon is here to celebrate.

You get FIVE picks from the selection presented. To get it down to something representative and manageable I have bent the strict Friday Canon rules a little, i.e. OUT goes "No Matter What" by Boyzone, IN comes "Superstar" and only one version per song is listed. BUT if you love a song and don't know the precise version given you may of course vote for it anyway.

[Poll #701614]

Wasn't it good? OH SO GOOD.

Take That Look Off Your Face

I know this is a different song from "Shaddup You Face" but my brain jukebox does not agree.

YOU MUST BE MISTAKEN

Am I completely alone in not being able to think of a single ALW song I can even comfortably tolerate?

[identity profile] jauntyalan.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
not even "i know him so well"?

[identity profile] strange-powers.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I may be wrong, but isn't Chess a Tim Rice/Benny/Bjorn thing, with NO WEBER INVOLVEMEMT whatsoever?

It may be something I've just kept telling myself to make it easier to face up to, though.

all these songs have been covered by john holt martin!

oops i voted for loads more than five :\

[identity profile] martinskidmore.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no such purdah, but I don't like that song either. Mark is probably correct that there are covers of many of these songs by singers I like (not that I am hugely keen on John Holt, mostly), but I can feel my neck and shoulder and jaw muscles tensing uncomfortably just thinking of these songs, and imagining them by someone good doesn't help that much - but the singers listed here do more harm than good.

I'm less of a musicals fan than most, and didn't tick a huge number on Kat's poll - often more because of ignorance than distaste, though.

Phantom of the Opera - Brightman and Michael Crawford, no?

The first lot are ace, and the second lot are rub, and there is a clear line between the two. Also, the Worst Song Official Like is that Madonna one. (But possibly I think this only because it annoys me to pieces by being in the movie.) Also I want to listen to Evita now and I don't have it at work.

I cd never take Michael Crawford seriously. Too much viewing of Frank Spencer as a child.

Snap! Almost. The first tape I wore out (and then sellotapeed together) was my Gran's copy of Evita. (The Proper Studio Version)

The second tape I wore out was the Best of Leonard Cohen, in the middle of Famous Blue Raincoat.

haha ditto except mine was the LP and i was given GODSPELL at the same time yahoo!

my avant garde roots come via VARIATIONS = south bank show themetune!

i think it is played by COLOSSEUM II (plus julian) (who we once interviewed in wire!!)

[identity profile] dubdobdee.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
haha amazon review of VARIATIONS ends thus: "With all the ingredients of a classic album it still stands the test of time"!!!

[identity profile] sbp.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It does! It's ace. It was my early exposure to odd time signatures and analogue synths! My parents watched the SBS and thought "that's nice" and bought the tape, which we listened to a lot during Monopoly games. And then you find out it's got Gary Moore on it! And Don Airey and Jon Hiseman and Barbara Thompson. And a "tribute" section featuring a thinly disguised version of FBI. On the whole, 5/4-tastic!

Nice legs, that Tim Rice.

[identity profile] spittake.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
my choice for BEST is a 60s girl pop song that sounds like half the songs from Evita. I sent it to an ILXor who said it sounded like Another Suitcase in Another Hall, which is the one song it sounds NOTHING like.

[identity profile] spittake.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
the other best version is Ken Freedman performing Heaven on Their Minds, but the archive of it at wfmu.org is unavailable, it seems.

i love evita, i have no idea why, but esp madonnas version gets to me

I retract my favourite.
