I know what the party line is, and i follow it most days, Pop is fun, Pop is candy, Pop is nostalgia, don't take pop too seriously, being meta, being over the top. being camp, stripping shit down to its basic bass bump is SOP, and nothing is too stupid to avoid defenders, cause all of it is a kids game played by grown-ups, and if i want things to be serious, then well go listen to Dylan or something.

Trace Adkins new single is old news, its been on all the message boards, the videos all over CMT, late nite comix have made as many jokers as the bloggers have, and I should be able to just laugh it off. Hony Tonk Badonkadonk, oh look its a booty song, oh look its about women, isnt it "clever". But I keep thinking that it hates women, and its quasi racist, and shit like this blows up, when genuine slippages b/w hip hop and country go unlistened to by anyone but critics.

Even worse, Adkins' last song was called Arlington, the only song abut the iraq war that actually mentions bodies in the ground.

I want pop to be about something. Thats horribly naive of me, isnt it ?

Thru the stage magic of theory, I have made culture about things it wasnt--i convinced myself that Jessica Simpson was a pop goddess, and the rise of Crazy Frog was the rise of a new prophet. How long can you mainline sugar before you become a diabetic though? Even Chely Wright's Bumper of my SUV, said something, said something horribly fascist, and kind of silly, but had an opinon beyond "I like to fuck broads with big asses"

To quote myself "The smart artist brings terror and conflict to the party because he thinks it will make a better party, not to make the party more 'realistic.'" (P. 283 of my book, which drops in 10 days, and I want you all to buy it, but don't buy the hardcover version, which is for libraries only and is ridiculously expensive and I'm not even sure they're actually going to print it; anyway, Amazon claims it'll sell the paperback for 30% off or something, which'll put the price somewhere around $16 [don't know what that is in pounds].) As for the party line, no, it's not the party line, but in practice there are tendencies around here to defiantly plump for the frivolous and to knock down a fabulously great Miranda Lambert song in favor of a fabulously silly M-O-R-N-I-N-G-W-O-O-D song and to excoriate the valiant Italian team for bringing grunge metal to the pop cup.
