Morningwood - Nth Degree 9
Sir Lancelot - Pan american way 9
Bodies Without Organs - Gone 9

Gene Serene & John Downfall - The Hours 7

Coldplay - Talk (Jacques Lu Cont Mix) 6
The Knife - Neverland 6

The Knife - silent shout 5
Cat Power - The Greatest 5
The Knife - The captain 5
The Knife - Marble house 5

Morningwood still at the top, but now sharing their slice of the pop pie at 9 plays each with Pop World Cup entries: Bodies Without Organs (yay the all conquering* swedes) and Sir Lancelot (plucky Trinidad/Tobago). England trailing behind in 4th place... BREAKING NEWS swedes swizzed as England qualify!! What mad science is this?

However winning on points - as predicted last week- are Teh Knife with FOUR songs. My that's almost an entirely new album there. I suspect that the mysterious TARWATER may feature here next week. SEE YOU THEN

Sir Lancelot = only non indie song here.

Maybe BWO.

I find them wimpy and bloodless - in fact given your own Robyn-hate I'm surprised that you like BWO as I think they commit all the same sins but even worse.

Gareth and I were talking last night about how a lot of the pro-pop people appear to have collectively decided that pop is a sonic genre rather than...anything and everything which cannibalises anything and everything else with an eye on the charts and sonic results all over the map, which is how I would want to define and approve of pop. And this sonic genre is Wimpy Bloodless Scandinavians - and with a few exceptions, I find myself unable to be very down with that. And BWO are basically the epitome of its worst aspects.

Do you think the above paragraph deserves a post of its own?

it's only the "actually indie pretend pro-pop" people who think that ;)

I'm not a huge fan of BWO, some of their songs are good, some less so, on the whole where the material needs wimpiness (that one about the rain) the wimpiness works. I'm comfy with their style though, quite knowingly traditional. Robyn is more interesting but more annoying. Alcazar do similar things to BWO but 100 times better usually.

I think the pop as scavenger vs pop as style question is interesting enough for its own post and it touches on a lot of the stuff I've been mulling over myself. I am about to go to the most boring meeting of the year though so don't expect much from me.

Teh Knife = textbook definition of indie music which indie music fans like to think of as pop, shurely. Given it takes a sensitive acoustic cover of Heartbeats to get it into the pop charts it clearly ain't pop in its original form...

Heartbeats aside, I find the Knife pretty dire in non-remixed form - what off the new album should I hear to change this?

i doubt you'll like it as it's GOTHTRONICA with glacial synths a go go, tho i find it all quite marvellous

didn't you like 'Is It Medicine?' off 'Deep Cuts'?

NO WAI

indie has to involve guitars - simple golden rule #1 - The Knife don't use them. Kate Bush is indier than The Knife.

Don't think I heard it, I only dl'ed a couple of tracks other than heartbeats, thought "right, I know your game mateys" and stopped. Oh and I heard a wretched Xmas song too!

I am surprised again! I love The Knife - I think of them as a more songful offshoot of banging electro, rather than wimpy Bodies Without Blood type pop (also Karin Dreijer's voice is v definitely NOT bloodless and wimpy). I like 'Pass This On' and 'You Take My Breath Away' especially (haven't heard new album apart from 'Silent Shout' though).

I'd like you to talk about wimpiness. I'm far more indie than you--possibly that's why wimpiness doesnt bother me so much! :)
