Pop World Cup: Group A Results

A shocking collapse by Poland in their group A clash with Ecuador saw [livejournal.com profile] steviespitfire's team crash out of the Pop World Cup at the first hurdle. Poland, who had at one stage been leading the group, were unable to cope with a transformed Ecuador and pundits back in Warsaw will be asking questions about the manager's choice of two big players up front. Ecuador meanwhile deployed their full arsenal of tricks to book a place in the round of 16, against the winner of Group B, which kicks off tomorrow.

In Group A's other match, favourites Germany glided through to the round of 16 as group A winners, their assured performance against Costa Rica meaning that [livejournal.com profile] sbp's men's early stutters were forgotten. Costa Rica played aggressively and gave a good account of themselves without ever really threatening and despite a low points total "the Kittens" will reflect on some valuable experience gained at this level of pop.

Results In Full

GERMANY - 189 points (Qualify)
ECUADOR - 167 points (Qualify)
Poland - 144 points
Costa Rica - 100 points

Costa Rica gave a display of gutsy menace, a quality sadly absent from today's cup leagues. But at the end of the day results are what counts.

The tennis equivalent would be a HOTT NUBILE BLONDE EASTERN EUROPEAN POWER-MONSTER TEENAGE PHENOMENON choking and committing 100 unforced errors in the match everyone had tipped to be her breakthrough! ie Nicole Vaidisova in the Australian Open t'other day.

Oh god I forgot to VOTE and didn't even download any of the songs, I feel TERRIBLE on behalf of France's Splendide Isolatione policy and vow to rectify this in the next round, especially as Poland sounded GREBT, oh!

I blame the Burgundians!

I thought Poland had real potential but they just became exposed at the back all too often. And the strength they had up front was just not getting the support it needed. Sorry lads.

Oh, c0cks.

Well, I hope you're all happy with yourselfs, you've crushed a young boy's (wet) dreams.

(I actually expected this would happen, for some reason. After yesterday.)

Ecuador played a cagey, unconventional game hitting on the break constantly. Lots of intricate passing in the middle of the field but not really going anywhere much of the time. Yet they grabbed a couple of great chances in the air and it paid off. Where they go from here is anyone's guess mind you.

also (with respect, you understand [livejournal.com profile] sbp) but that's an ARCHETYPAL german performance, a little underwhelming, coasting on past glories somewhat, but still managing to top the group. i think we can safely assume they'll get to the final...

I'm still hoping France and Germany will be somehow undone by the sheer abundant shower of riches at their disposal.

Last week I found some quite decent Togo pop so watch yer backs eh.
