1990! TIME FOR THE GURU! Except Josh can't muscle his way in such is the amazing all-star line up on Now 17. The Now series discovers baggy and goes indie crazy, except at the same time it goes dance crazy (again!) and it's a shame only one of the stellar tracks here can win. I may be showing my age here a little - I was 17 years old and sticking the funky drummer beat under some flared mumbling was the MOST EXCITING THING POP COULD DO, bring it on Candy Flip. Phil Collins may pop up to harsh the buzz but rejoice that his perhaps worst ever hit is represented here in its comedy dance version by Jam Tronik.

The vibe was strongly felt on Now 16 with Technotronic's "Pump Up The Jam" ending up walking it, "Street Tuff" 5 votes behind in second and De La Soul third. Kate Bush got under 50%. No real consensus on worst though Wet Wet Wet and Richard Marx got a certain amount of disapproval. Definite consensus on Bros - "When Will I Be Famous?" is the one. But enough of history (like a beat up car), on to the FUTUR as it was at the dawn of an new decade...

I have voted for everything in the third section on RAVE PRINCIPLE! I haven't heard a couple but surely nothing called 'Everything Starts With An E' can ever be bad.

LOOK OUT!

I cannot stress enough the GENIUS of 'Happenin All Over Again' by Lonnie Gordon.

Free me from this day....

Everything starts with an E is JOY.

There is so much JOY on this NOW, I'm finding it hard to contain myself.

sticking the funky drummer beat under some flared mumbling was the MOST EXCITING THING POP COULD DO, bring it on Candy Flip.

I have NO IDEA what you are talking about here. None.

Mind you, for me, this NOW marks the beginning of =songs which I have liked ever since then (there will be a later drop-off during my indie-student-muso-zzzzzz period, sadly) and of my 'ooh, see the liking of the indie and the dance music AT THE SAME TIME' halcyon days. (ho ho)

Got To Have Your Love Is One of The BEST things EVAR - that bassline=shivers up spine whenever I here it. Less so the 12" with the ever-so-slightly dated RAP.

I think it may be cheating that I voted YES for 'Enough is Enough' based on the fantastic version done by Jimmy Somerville and kd lang at a Red, Hot and Blue concert.

Ah well. A vote for Jimmy is a vote for TRUTH

most of these were def current in 89 tho. i had re-established myself as the indie-dance king at this point. in fact this is my favourite for about 4 or 5 polls.

Yup. I can remember being superior 14 y-o muttering about baggy in my small southern town, exposed via mate's brother who was at uni in manchester.

Howge Flares. Joe Bloggs hoody. OHGODOHGOD Beanie Hat.

I must have looked 'fantastic'

OMG. Thankyou. I am having a grumpy day and you have just made me LOL.

Oh dear, you have my sympathies.

I was spoiled brat of the ages, hence the label gear.

And oh! Bright red Kickers! I *loved* those so.

I have a pic of me and similarly stick-thin mate wearing my flares, one body in each trouser leg.

Ridiculous.
