It's that time of year again! The 2010 Mercury Music Prize will be announced tonight, which means that I can declare the [livejournal.com profile] poptimists 2010 Lex 20p Indie Prize officially open!

Voting criteria are as complex and unfathomable as ever, however here are some hints as to how you can make your selection.

* Your favourite act on the list
* Your least favourite act on the list
* The indiest act on the list
* The act that most likely to make you exclaim 'God Help Us If There's A War'
* The act that is most likely to make the Lex ([livejournal.com profile] alexmacpherson) wail/gnash his teeth if it wins
* The only act on the list you've vaguely heard of
* The act with the stupidest name

Feel free to look back at previous 20p prizes for inspiration - past winners include Art Brut, The Automatic, The Ting Tings and er, Mastodon.

Voting closes at lunchtime on Friday!

[Poll #1615943]

The winners will be played at Friday's Poptimism* (Horse Bar, 7-12, free entry, top pop tunes) and 20p 'presented to' the Lex to pass on to them.

*The omission of Dizzee Rascal from the nominations list is basically because i) he is in no way indie apart from the 'record label' sense ii) he is going to get played at Poptimism anyway so it would be unfair to the others.

Is Kasabian being in the 'foreign' list some sort of in-joke, perhaps directed at Leicester?

I dunno, they might be helpful in a war - they have sturdy footwear and are brave enough to encounter creatures with big antlers.

Will tic-tactically switch my votes if necessary. Still, I didn't expect Allo Darlin' to jump into an early lead (i.e. WHO????)

It feels like now is Scouting For Girls' moment. Last year it was all too raw and fresh and horrible but this year I am entirely disconnected from music.

Obviously there have never been any non-indie, American winners of the prize. *coff*

That Sleigh Bells album is really, really good. Extremely good. I'm still voting for Arcade Fire though.

Ah OK it is an actual thing not a (n)in-joke! It does indeed sound as if the Lex would hate them but it also sounds as if I would hate them too. I voted Marina for the simple reason that I am actually going to play some on Friday.

Sub-par Camera Obscura-esque indiepop. Mostly quite yawn.

Curses, was going to vote for The xx until I remembered that the lex doesn't hate them. Mumford & Sons obv.s worst artist ever but that also means I can't bring myself to vote for them even for a possibly negative award.

The name factor, then: which is more cringeworthy, 'Allo Darling or Pulled Apart By Horses? In the end the latter wins, partially through reminding me of the yawningly dull Tired Pony.

Thank all the gods, I was beginning to think it was just me! I did vote for them though - does that mean they actually aren't that bad?
