This news is worse than the Mercury shortlist! When? Why?

according to bbc:

There’s a bewitching, precocious charm about Conor O’Brien’s debut album as Villagers. Having served his indie rock apprenticeship with angular guitar slingers, The Immediate, the Dubliner’s solo offering is a different beast altogether and exudes an aura of maturity that belies his tender age.

At its core, Becoming a Jackal is an album of childhood fantasia, the inevitable changes that come with growing up and the environment in which this is experienced.

so not really...

hey there, moody chops!

Dizzee should win as his album's the least serious one. CBR and Paul Weller are boring.

Triple Mini Viva = I am not going to bother to apply for judging thing this year. Also why pick 2nd best Alex Burke single? DOES NOT COMPUTE. Sophie E-B the best of the bunch, anyway.

Lex 20p prize = JEDWARD FRIGHTENED RABBIT

Lex 20p Prize contenders

1. Marina and plus also Her Diamonds (in the obligatory La Roux spot)

2. Weller (the 1 x-over from the Mercury list this year, methinks. One of the few rock acts to get into the Top 40 this year. Went all "experimental" on new album and even cited Broadcast & The Focus Group as an inspiration, which just proves how INDIE he is)

3. Scouting For Girls AGANE

+ possibly
4. School Of Seven Bells (if non-Brit acts are allowed, but NB the Lex actually likes them)

Finlay von Guillemot!

Is this prize pro or con, I forget: Sleigh Bells are "due" a "reappraisal"

I can't imagine anyone who isn't called "The XX" winning it, tbh.

I imagine most are happy about the first ever non-Girls Aloud PJ20£ but that means no stories of Nicola/other members dropping in to spit bile about own group, which is a shame. The nominees aren't getting me very excited otherwise. I imagine The xx will win the mercury, and deservedly so.

Does reappraisal include the claim that they are British?

For the Lex prize I nominate...

DIZZEE RASCAL

first year where I'd say he's eligible

(though I'll probably end up voting for Marina)

Is the Lex 20p Brit only? I suppose by extension it should be, but it will be less fun.

I thought it always was Brit only. Someone should hunt up the old editions of this event. Unfortunately, there seems to be no tag.

Ah, here is last year's discussion on the uk-only issue, in which not only was the prize affirmed to be uk-only, but a number of us violated this dictum.

If you type 'em in with a space rather than a plus sign, lj automatically supplies the %20 that they'd put in place of +.

So one can type this into the address line:

http://community.livejournal.com/poptimists/tag/lex 20p indie prize

and can also make it the tag for this thread.
