A New Decade In Pop: Week #17

Many thanks to Moggy for holding the fort in my absence. I return to find that we have a new number 1 in the shape of Diana Vickers! Blimey.

[Poll #1556389]

Don't forget to go and a) suggest songs for [livejournal.com profile] skyecaptain about Melotrauma b) vote in the knock-out stages of the Pop World Cup!

Top marks to Chip Diddy Chip and Esmee here for appropriating the chorus of "We're All Going To The Zoo Tomorrow".

Not sure what your rule is on re-entries (how much time has to elapse before you're willing to count 'em again) but "Don't Trust Me" first entered the chart last July, when I was one of only four to tick it.

This week I'm actually going to tick one of the Glees, but first I've got to go evaluate it for Yet Another Year In America, which I failed to do before time shifted to yet another week in america.

Not rating Tina and Gerry as per my policy on re-entries, which is that I ignore re-entries unless I've got a reason not to; my reason not to with 3OH!3 is that "Don't Trust Me" is as virulent and shaky as ever and was one of the best songs to receive nearly universal condemnation in my Web hood - not that it doesn't court condemnation.

Diana Vickers "Once": Sketchily quirky? Approximately quirky? Meta quirky? And then guitars, to let us know the chorus has arrived. I'd say from this evidence that Diana's no Didi Benami, but she does manage to eke out a tick from me with the cleverly paradoxical repetition of "once." BORDERLINE TICK.

Chipmunk ft. Esmee Denters "Until You Were Gone": Fine rap voice saying nothing, Esmee being nothing, and though Chipmunk's saying "You took off quicker than my career" made me smile for half a second, the rest is rote regret. NO TICK.

Glee Cast ft. Lea Michele "Gives You Hell": High-pitched, weird, and nervy, Lea vastly improves a track that was callow and equivocal in its original. May be the first time Glee has improved anything. BORDERLINE TICK.

3OH!3 "Don't Trust Me": I'll just link what I wrote last July. The song remains snotty and uneasy. TICK TICK TICK.

Glee Cast ft. Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele "Hello": The guy phrases and holds his tone all right but his voice is average inexpressiveness. I do think this is arranged nicely, just enough piano to enrich the sound without layering everything in sap. BORDERLINE NONTICK.

NOT ACCEPTABLE

Diana Vickers sounds exactly like that harpy from the Cranberries. For the horrors that evokes, and for being bloody annoying on its own, NO TICK.
