Sugababes, Kelly, Snoop & Justin, Three 6 Mafia and MIA make it through. Who will join them? Onto the last heat of 2005!

  • You get SIX TICKS over the three bits of the poll, unless you told us all your new favourite (and why) from the last heat. Put your new favourite in the box below and get an extra tick for the next heat - do it for five or more heats and get an extra nomination for 2006 (unless I think of something else to do in 2006).

  • The top five in each heat will go through to the next stage. Make sure you rep for your faves in the comments!

  • If you want to fill in the 'best song I only heard today' box later, change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • You have until Tuesday lunchtime to vote.

[Poll #1540113]

Extra ticks this heat go to [livejournal.com profile] laschifosavita, [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus, [livejournal.com profile] koganbot, [livejournal.com profile] skyecaptain and [livejournal.com profile] meserach.

A brilliant gimmick, executed flawlessly. Also, wicked filthy.

Oh, this video is so baffling - nothing to do with the song, lots of grisly images interspersed with the psychedelic and images of the band. More on my love of / my interpretation of the song here (http://mrs-leroy-brown.livejournal.com/229091.html#cutid1)

Remix of the decade! Maybe THING of the decade. OK, a bit extreme. But this is SO SO good. Please listen:

(This may or may not be embeddable but I can't tell as I now get the following message pasted across all YouTube pages: "Hey there, this is not a commercial interruption. You’re using an outdated browser, which YouTube no longer supports. Some features on YouTube may not work. Please upgrade to a modern browser." STUPID OUTDATED WERK PCs.)

Lady Saw and Elephant Man offset the usual Lil Jon shoutathon in their own inimtable styles.

T. Waters "Throw'd Off," song twisting angrily around itself, weird plucked string line that could be south Asia, is actually Atlanta, the dirty south 2005 in its inventiveness.

Jessica Simpson "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," Jessica goofing her way through an experimentally strange, minimalist crypto-reggaeton country track. (Yes, that rhythm is reggaeton.)

I normally steer well clear of 'comedy' music, but as well as being pretty funny (these things rarely are), this Goldie Lookin' Chain track is actually rather majestic in its own right. Bizarrely heartwarming?

This is the only song that earwormed me in exactly the same way it probably did its target audience -- they played it on RD three to five times an hour, and for a long time that was the only place I ever heard the thing. (Don't listen to RD much anymore, but at the time I'd listen for ten to fifteen minutes every couple days to see what was going on.)

Fairly weak heat, and with an extra vote I have two or three votes that will probably go to new finds in the list.

Around this point I went all techno-trance, all the time.

This is the worst Narcade Fire song, if it's the one I'm thinking of (i.e. the bombastic one that starts WOOOOOAAAAAAH WOOOAAAAAARRRGH WOOAAHHH-OH-OH-OH). Just embarrassingly bad.

One of my top 5 tracks of the noughties

Massive, crushing, molasses-dark trance, driving and relentless. HUGE.

(Of note is also the fact that Gabriel & Dresden were 2/3 of Motorcycle, which means they're responsible for TWO of my top ten tunes of the decade. Not bad for a pair of random trance dudes!)

And speaking of massive and crushing...

...how about the HUGEST MF'IN RIFF OF THE YEAR? There's a reason post-punk dudes Disco Ensemble broke through with this single, and that reason is that it is EFFIN BRILLIANT.

and it's COOOOOOLD OUTSIIIIIIIDE

DT8: the lyrics may have some well daft moments ("a pain lies deep in the heart of my soul"?), but dude, you CANNOT argue with that chorus:

And I should prob post the Kray Twinz thing too seeing as I nominated it -- decent cross-Atlantic grime antics with a hyperactive eastern string motif:

Awesome eurobosh number sung by an 11 year old. !2th best selling single of all time in France, the general boshiness and the accordion work together to make it sound less cutesy than it could have done, and Ilona's clipped vocal delivery is a great contrast to the usual dance diva. Great video too.

A message from Jesus

Dear Poptimists,

I'm just writing to ask you to cast your vote for one of my favourite young disciples, the lovely Miss Yolanda Adams.

I love the way absolutely every element of 'Victory'is dialled up to 11 in praise of me - the backing singers singing every word of the chorus like it hgas an exclamation mark after it, the huge vworping noises that run throughout, the slightly histronic ascending and descneding synths in the background, and the way Yolanda herself belts out every line like her life depends on it.

If only all the music dedicated to me was quite this fun.

Yours, Jesus

Amen

I'd like to officially declare that my What Else Is There? tick is to 50% for the original version, 30% other remixes, and 20% the remix in question. Just so it's *ahem* clear, you know.

Also dudes how is We Belong Together only just scraping through? C'MON!
