Best song of 2005: NOMINATIONS

# 10 song per person limit on stuff that didn't chart in the UK top 40 in 2005 (except for [livejournal.com profile] koganbot, [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus, [livejournal.com profile] friend_of_tofu and [livejournal.com profile] jeff_worrell who get 11).

# Nominate as many charting hits as you like.

# Nominating fewer than 10 non-charting songs is perfectly fine.

# Do check everyhit for chart placings: if your song might be spelled weirdly and doesn't show up in the results, try searching by artist instead of title (or vice versa) or using 'contains the word' instead of 'first few letters'.

# Posting nominations in a new comment thread rather than as a reply to another comment is strongly recommended, as I am lazy and therefore unlikely to go digging around in nested comments etc.

# Don't worry about repeating someone else's nomination - as far as humanly possible I'll let you know if one of your ten picks is already nominated so you can choose another one.

# Nominate double-A sides and EP tracks separately please!

# Any queries regarding years/chart positions shall be subject to my WHIM.

# Need more help? Have a look at the examples on the 2002 nominations post.

One extra rule for 2005: NO ELVIS RE-ISSUES ALLOWED.

From UK chart:

Towers Of London - On A Noose
Towers Of London - How Rude She Was
Darkness - One Way Ticket

Eight non-charters (will try to remember to fill in the other two later, depending on what songs other people nominate):

Shooter Jennings feat. George Jones - 4th of July
Rod Lee - Dance My Pain Away
Dierks Bentley - Lot of Leavin' Left to Do
Hope Partlow - Crazy Summer Nights
DJ Lil Jay - What Chew Know About Down the Hill
Kentucky Headhunters - Big Boss Man
Toby Keith - As Good As I Once Was
Little Big Town - Boondocks

(Feel like I should probably also be nominating a Hold Steady song from Separation Sunday too, but I have no idea which track. Which may well mean I shouldn't be nominating one after all.)

[identity profile] justfanoe.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I was about to nominate Boondocks, 4th of July and As Good As I once was, so you just saved me 3 nomination slot (by 18 minutes!)

Does anyone want to take any of the above off my hands?

Nonchahtas pt 2: the extremely longwinded edition

[personal profile] credoimprobus 2010-02-05 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
(because you can never start repping too early!)

Jori Hulkkonen feat. John Foxx - Dislocated
would be my tune of the year if if 1 Thing (which may be my tune of the decade) didn't exist; may be familiar to peeps wut checked that I Has a Plan-centric mix of mine a couple of years (DEAR GOD) back.

Rachael Starr - Till There Was You (Gabriel & Dresden Remix)
massive, crushing, molasses-dark trance; unquestionably my remix of the decade. Because I am a GIANT GOTH.

Disco Ensemble - We Might Fall Apart
RIFF OF THE MF'IN YEAR. If anyone tries to tell me otherwise, they will be VERY WRONG.

iiO - Chastity
iiO - Kiss You
breaking my one track per artist rule because if I can't do it for my album of the decade, etc etc; one indulgent personal (as it were) pick (the hypnotically repetitive 9-min long one with only 3 mins of vocals in the middle, which incidentally is also THE BEST TRACK ON THE ALBUM), and the er more populist pick (as much as anything on Poetica can qualify as "populist", which is NOT A LOT -- still, was a single and everything! also is one of the album's hookiest numbers)

Vex'd - Lion VIP
SUPER SUPER SUPER (SUPER) BANGING, OMG. Aka the dubstep invasion starts HERE! Nothing like canonised, but it remains one of my favourite early(ish) dubstep tunes AAAAGH.

Booka Shade - Mandarine Girl
I trust someone more invested will be nominating The Obvious One, yes? Anyway, I really prefer the '06 album version (by a fair margin), but you gotta keep this stuff to year of impact innit!

Stam1na - Kadonneet kolme sanaa
because I can't be from Finland and not nominate Finnish metal at some point, right? XD Amazing debut single from what's become our possibly most critically acclaimed metal band; one of my domestic (and otherwise!) tunes of the decade. IMO they still haven't really topped this first heady height.

Smithmonger vs. Kobi - Grizzle
ridic awesome breaksy (?) stuff!

Mice Parade - Milton Road (Kim Hiorthøy My Skull With Flowers Remix)
Obligatory unnecessarily obscure pick; because I didn't have the heart to pick Roll Deep* over this one even though it is going to get NO TICKS. <33333

JME - Serious
JUST! BOP YOUR HEAD! TO THE BEAT!

*) if anyone else wld feel moved to nominate that Roll Deep track, though, I wouldn't mind in the least! That airy piano riff was one of the best things about my 2005, waaaah <3 <3

The Pipettes - all non-top-40

[identity profile] meserach.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
These were all released as singles in 2005, prior to the release of the We Are The Pipettes album in 2006. "Dirty Mind" got to number 63 tho!

The Pipettes - "I Like a Boy in Uniform (School Uniform)"
The Pipettes - "ABC"
The Pipettes - "Judy"
The Pipettes - "Dirty Mind"

Other stuff on the album, plus the two singles that did break the top 40, will have to wait until 2006.

Note re: The Long Blondes

[identity profile] meserach.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming that "Giddy Stratospheres" has to wait until 2007, because that's when it managed to chart at #37 as a re-issue?

Might nominate some of their other singles tho...
koganbot: (Default)

[personal profile] koganbot 2010-02-05 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, here are my first five non-charters:

T. Waters - Throw'd Off
Rich Boy - Get To Poppin'
Deana Carter - The Girl You Left Me For
Jamie O'Neal - Devil On The Left
Foxy Brown ft. Sizzla - Come Fly With Me

Richard Hawley - Born Under a Bad Sign

Strategically leaving myself one slot.

1x PROPER SHAME

[identity profile] meserach.livejournal.com 2010-02-06 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You all FORGOT to nominate Mousse-T's "Is It 'Cause I'm Cool" for 2004 while I was netless! Sadface :(
koganbot: (Default)

Sex Bomb baby!

[personal profile] koganbot 2010-02-07 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I even forget to know who Mousse T. is. But this is a nice track.
koganbot: (Default)

She had on that scarf I gave you, and you got down and tie her laces

[personal profile] koganbot 2010-02-07 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
More non-charters:

t.A.T.u. - Cosmos (Outer Space)
Ashlee Simpson - I Am Me
Ben Watt ft. Est'elle - Pop A Cap In Your Ass
Lindsay Lohan - First

And now, my final two will need a ruling from JUDGE KAT as to whether they qualify for 2005:

Robyn - Be Mine!
The Veronicas - 4ever

--"Be Mine!"'s chart peak in the U.K. was January 2008, but no freakin' way!
--"4ever"'s chart peak in the U.K. was October 2009, but no freakin' way!

(I hope those are cogent arguments. Let me know how you rule, cause if you rule agin' me I'll need to nominate two others.)

Re: She had on that scarf I gave you, and you got down and tie her laces

[identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I was going to ask the same thing about the Robyn singles - it would be ridiculous to discuss them in 2008 (especially as any album tracks from the same album would be discussed in 2005 i think)

[identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Charting:
MIA - Bucky Done Gun
LCD Soundsystem - Tribulations
Goldfrapp - Oooh La La
Futureheads - Hounds of Love
Bloc Party - Helicopter
Robyn - Who's That Girl

Non-Charting:
DJ Earworm - Since U Been Gahan (Kelly Clarkson v Depeche Mode/Rex The Dog mashup)
Roisin Murphy - Sow into You
Wir Sind Helden - Nur Ein Wort
Rilo Kiley - Portions for Foxes
K-Maro - Femme Like U
Tres Bien avec Ilona - Un Monde Parfait
Martha Wainwright - Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole
Yolanda Adams – Victory
Kate Bush - Sunset
Robyn - Bum Like You

[identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and some early repping for the non-charters.

The DJ Earworm one is my favourite mashup ever, turning Kelly's marvellous Since U Been Gone into a marvellous electropop stomper by backing it with the Rex The Dog dub of Depeche Mode's Photographic. (Dave Gahan is mercifully absent in case the title put you off).
Embedding disabled so here's the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjZWwuf1MMk

& the Wir Sind Helden one, as well as being my favourite song of theirs, has an excellent video which is a nice modern twist on the old Bob Dylan lyrics on cards thing:

Oh yeah, need another ruling from JUDGE KAT as to whether, if we count "4ever" and "Be Mine!" (and "Who's That Girl" in [livejournal.com profile] lockedintheatti's nominations) as '05, they nonetheless get considered "charting" songs since they eventually charted in the UK though not in '05. If they do count as charting songs, I get another two nominees.

[identity profile] meserach.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
If this does happen, then Giddy Stratospheres should also count as a charting track for 2005 by similar logic, giving martinv an extra slot.

Wait (The Whisper Song)

[identity profile] meserach.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
A non-chart nomination this (plus my Pipettes stuff, that's five), as it only reached #47 here:

Ying-Yang Twins - Wait (The Whisper Song)

Fantastic peace of gimmick sleaze this:

Video features members of Electrik Red! Before they were (marginally more) famous!

I hope I have my years right.

HITS
Game ftr 50 Cent - How We Do
Game ftr 50 Cent - Hate It Or Love It
Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz - Get Low
(has that been in already in another year or something?)

NOT HITS
GZA Vs DJ Muggs - Destruction Of A Guard
Lady Sovereign - Hoodie
Robyn - Should Have Known
Sugababes - 2 Hearts
Carrie Underwood - Before He Cheats
Vitalic - My Friend Dario
koganbot: (Default)

[personal profile] koganbot 2010-02-10 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Before He Cheats" was on a 2005 album but was a 2006 single in the U.S., so we should let Kat put it in whichever year she wants. I'll vote for it no matter what.

We did "Get Low" in 2003, because I argued that, despite its having charted later in Britain, 2003 was the year it changed music. It made it to the next bracket, though as only the 28th best vote getter, which is even worse than Pazz & Jop gave it.

Another ruling needed

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2010-02-10 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Is Shakira's "Timor" 2005 or 2006? I think the album came out in the US at the end of '05 but not in the UK until well into '06. I'd rather save it for 2006 if poss.

If it is '06 then my last nomination for '05 is:
Aavikko - "Rosinante"
