Freak or marketing exercise?

I may be (proven) wrong, but I really get the feeling that Lady G is all kinds of freak, and not just doing what she does to get attention (although obviously she thrives on that as well).

I somehow can't tick any of the boxes on the first question, because I remain puzzled at why I don't like the music, admire her approach or fancy her as much as on paper I should.

She annoys the heck out of me.
I can't stand attention seeking on that high a level.

Her songs are damn catchy though.

It's more nuanced - three of her songs are catchy as hell. The rest are drivel.

You seem to have left the option "is a pretentious stupid fuck DIE DIE DIE" out of the first question, just fyi.

The "Lady Gaga is really AN MAN" people are pop's very own birther movement!

This morning I woke up with "Paparazzi" in my head and the distinct impression that it had SOUNDTRACKED MY DREAMS all night!

...In general, though, I'm puzzled why her songs aren't better than they are - they're all sort of 75% there, and surely it can't be that difficult? I expect improvement on the second album.

(She seems to appeal a lot to what in Montreal one calls Crescent St. girls - the high heels & tight jeans mainstream club-going Perez-reading contingent - and to non-theoretical artsy types, like painters and fashion stylists/designers. I actually think the latter recognize that her message isn't original but are delighted that there is someone currently pushing through that message on a hugely popular scale, in the same way that dubstep fans are happy Skream got a gold record.)

I mean...She has three-ish awesome songs and a bunch of rubbish songs, most of which are catchy to a greater or lesser degree. She's one of the first "pop stars" in quite some time to approach it in an all-encompassing package-type conceptual matter and has somehow managed to become massively popular.

Her voice annoys me. I think her "concept" is nowhere near as smart as she thinks it is and her performance/interpretations of said ideas can be insanely grating. She's massively overrated. But I can't quite deny what she's doing, even if I think she's doing it wrong, or shouldn't be doing it at all, or has misplaced goals re: pop things she wants to do.

It's quite the conundrum.

OTM re: Crescent St.ers. Although, she has surprising traction within certain parts of the indie scene (granted, it's within those segments that are painters and fashion stylists/designers)...the same segments of the scene that are likely to do a lot of blow and go see MSTRKRFT or Uffie or whoever.

Talented, yes - but I don't think her talent justifies the extent of her pretension.

Essentially I find her inherently vacuous - not that most pop music isn't, but for someone who talks incessantly about ambition and performance art, she really does have nothing to say, little emotion to convey and even less for anyone to identify with. Visually it's a spectacle, sure, but isn't art supposed to be either aesthetically pleasing or meaningful? If that's not the point, then what is? (Regarding the VMAs, I think most people were too busy laughing at her completely OTT tribute to tampons to get any actual "message" from that performance.)

Regardless, I wish her luck on the miniscule chance that she genuinely has potential to achieve something great. If not, seeing her go down in flames would be far more interesting than a thousand bland, formulaic Max Martin pop productions.

She is endlessly perplexing to me in that she is one of the few pop stars (and yes, she is a star) who makes me so angry that I cannot pay attention to her music. Usually I am able to at least somewhat divorce personality from songcraft and evaluate them separately. And objectively evaluated, I should probably enjoy her ("wacky" female musician, big synthy production)… and yet, no. Perhaps it is reaction formation. I suppose it is a testament to the strength of her… whatever it is she's calling it now- I guess "art" is the preferred shorthand- that she can provoke so strongly. But that doesn't mean I have to like it, or change my ways.

"Just Dance" is absolutely horrid though. I know that much to be true.

I'll be honest here: I fucking love her whole album, schtick, trouserless prancing, hairstyles, etc. these days. I mean really she seems so harmless and also I have this irrational like for most things Akon does.
