Best Song of 2000: Heat #8

Still D.R.E., Spinning Around and The Real Slim Shady led the pack in Heat #7, while Stronger and Stan fought off a last minute surge by The Bad Touch to join them in the 2000 final.

Last heat today! And there are some proper bangers below the cut...

  • You get a maximum of TEN TICKS over the three bits of the poll. The top five will go through to the next stage.

  • If you want to change your vote (or tick too many by mistake), you can edit your votes by clicking on 'Poll #12345' then 'Fill Out Poll'.

  • UK chart placings given in brackets.

  • Rep for your favourites in the comments!

[Poll #1423267]

You have until Friday lunchtime to vote, at which point I'll post a full list of the qualifiers for the 2000 final. HOWEVER we're not going to be voting on that straight away (to try and avoid tick-fatigue on the same songs). Instead, next week we're going to start nominations for 2001. There will be a slight change in nomination procedure (more details to follow) but there'll still be plenty of time to get your thinking caps on.

Once again, for the third straight heat, the song I was supporting was eliminated from a runoff thanks to a last second vote.

I'm rooting here for Daphne & Celeste and Sisqo, so bad news for those songs.

Let me tell 'em what'll mean the world
Ludacris and a couple a girls
You find a brotha runnin up in the girls
I get 'em drunk, chugga-luggin the girls
Ding-a-ling face huggin the girls
I get late - think I'm up with the girls?
Skeet, skeet, gone; it's all about that party
Bacardi - motions, rub lotion, all over your body

I'm from the M-I-A, that's where I dwell, niggaz can't you tell?
I'm bad as hell, even my pussy smell...
...LIKE CHANEL

I guess the poor showings for Ludacris, Trina and Kim thus far don't bode well for Cam'ron but prove me wrong, poptimists.

One of the tougher heats, this - Neko Case and Storm just missed out.

I really really really hate 'Your Disco Needs You' and 'Who Let The Dogs Out?'

'Woman Trouble'!!! Classic 4eva. I feel fantastic, bombastic, ecstatically astounded...surrounded, confounded, emotionally dumbfounded - such satisfying phonetics there.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2009-06-30 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
presumably that Camron track was a hit in the States but expecting tracks that didn't chart here to do well in these polls is mad unrealistic (unless well known album tracks by big names maybe).

Heheh, you've youtubed the two tracks I was about to go and hunt down and rep for. SRSLY THO; WOMAN TROUBLE IS BLVDDY AMAZING.

[identity profile] infov0re.livejournal.com 2009-06-30 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I had actually forgotten Woman Trouble, but it's all coming back to me. Yes, that's a very good song. Unfortunately, it fell outside my 10 ticks. Arse. Double-arse that Moving Too Fast didn't get through, though.

[identity profile] justfanoe.livejournal.com 2009-06-30 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that I think this stands a chance, but here's "U+Me=Us". It comes from a made for MTV boyband parody movie. This might have been a US only thing, I dunno.

Am considering rescinding PJ Harvey for Storm (or Neko) - I love love love 'This Is Love' but really don't think she should be rewarded for her worst album.

'Storm' by Storm is also great. i only recently ID'd it after knowing the tune for the ten years it's lived. RIP Mark Spoon!

Sorry.

I never thought I'd tick both Daphne & Celeste AND Lambchop in the same poll.

[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com 2009-06-30 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Time for me to make my regular, vain, protest that Moloko were rubbish. Roisin Murphy = most critically overrated pop artist of the 00s, Annie has nothing on her.

And: I hoped Wonderful, probably as close to Everclear got to make a genuinely fine song, might do better. It is not going to touch Daphne & Celeste, but come on people, 2?

[identity profile] piratemoggy.livejournal.com 2009-06-30 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Whups, didn't notice that was there. Knew there must be something for my final tick.

The ones I care the most about, besides sure winners like "There You Go" and "Try Again," are Teddybears STHLM's "Yours To Keep" (couldn't find the original streamed anywhere, but I linked the remix, which I'm not so hot on but it's [livejournal.com profile] poptasticuk's favorite version, I think)(anyway, what was nominated features Paola, not the inferior remake that came out years later f. Neneh Cherry) and "Wishin' All These Old Things Were New," which I couldn't find a stream of, but maybe you'll have better luck.

[identity profile] piratemoggy.livejournal.com 2009-06-30 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The Paola version went down really well at my uni's indiesoc once. I have no idea why they let me play records there tbh but anyway; Paola sounds so sweet and desperate for a bit of adventure.

It's Sheryl Crow on the later version isn't it? Either way it's absolute rubbish compared to the original, especially the extended mix.

I am distressed that the glorious Walking Through The Darkness by Tekitha (produced by the RZA, from his great Ghost Dog soundtrack) is getting no votes at all from anyone but me. No chance of it qualifying, clearly, but take a listen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QU9HnOgwhOo.

The real classics here for me are the wonderful efforts by Aaliyah (that production job... man) and Lambchop, closely followed by Moloko and Yo La Tengo.

The fascinating things about these polls is finding out who likes the more obscure things you like as much as you - or enough to tick 'em anyway. Also, the earnest conversations/arguments about people you've never heard (of), e.g. Storm and Everclear on this thread.

I know it's entirely my own fault I didn't check vote standings until my own last-minute votes just now, and therefore didn't get the chance to rep, but how am I the ONLY one who's voted for-- oh, wait, not youtubable, that would explain it. But! The True Steppers! So awesome! Too bad this comes too late to make a difference. :(

Second Chance poll

[identity profile] meserach.livejournal.com 2009-07-03 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
Soon as this heat is concluded, I'll start up a Second Chance poll (just for fun, unless Kat decides to let through the winner or something). Currently I reckon I'll just pick the top 5 non-qualifiers from each heat, forming a sort of "alternate top 40" of 2000, and give everyone ten ticks to pick out the best. See where that takes us.

Also, it'll be to late to actually help anyone, but I'll do the Spotify playlist for this heat probably some time today anyway.
