This summer it is the football World Cup in Germany. Your attitude to this may be one of hope, excitement, joy, apathy, disgust or despair, but whatever your views on football there is a tournament you will be able to enjoy...

THE POPTIMISTS POP WORLD CUP

Before this can begin however we need YOU to join up as a manager.

In the real world cup, 32 nations compete at football until one wins. In the Pop World Cup, 32 nations compete at pop. The entrants, and the tournament structure, are the same, but crucially you need no knowledge of football to join in. As a manager, your job will simply be to find songs from a given country to compete and send them to me. For each round your country competes in (to a maximum of 5) you will need one song. You will also need to write a 'team talk' - a brief sentence or two about the song and why it should win. And that's all!

The five stages are as follows:

Group Stage (32 teams)
Round of 16 (16 teams)
Quarter finals (8 teams)
Semi-finals (4 teams)
Final (2 teams) (there will also be a third place play-off, obv)

Each team will be represented by one song from a different artist each stage. Competition rules to be published next week along with the list of managers.

By a masterpiece of orgafun planning this extravaganza of pop should end during the week the football World Cup ends - v. exciting.

If you're interested in managing in the Pop World Cup then please let me know in the comments box, and please also indicate whether you want an easy or hard team, and whether you'd be up for managing 2 teams if we don't get the full 32 participants. Which team you get will be random. And remember - you need no knowledge of or liking for football to join in. You don't even need MP3 capability - I can find named tracks for you (though MP3less people will be limited to managing one of the easy teams).

Ask any questions you have in the comments box too. ALLEZ TOGO!

CRUCIAL ADDENDUM: The draw for the Poptimists World Cup i.e. who gets which team will be made in AN BOOZER next week, probably on Tuesday. More details of this to follow.

This is clearly a Game rather than a Sport, so is pleasing to me. I'll sign up, and you may as well give us a hard one(!)

Go on then. Any kind of team, two if needed. I can play and YSI and so on MP3s, and I use slsk and all that, so can cope. I think a cooperative attitude towards sharing some mp3s so that we don't get too stumped would be a good idea, though due to the unaccountable failure of Jamaica, Algeria, South Africa, Zambia, Zaire and so on to qualify, my big collection will be of less use than one might imagine.

Can we get a guarantee of peace in our time no subsequent History Of Our World At War In Pop Orgafun, please?

Having just the one team might be better - I'm sure we can get 32 people participating in this.

Martin's point about being able to share knowledge re more obscure countries Pop is good. Some sort of 'amnesty' period for this before the tournament begins perhaps?

I will join in! Don't mind how easy or hard the team is although it is already quite clear that Sweden will win so you should give me them.

will the group fixtures be the same as in the football World Cup i.e. England v Sweden in first round - or would you do a new, different draw?

If there's still room, I'd like a go! If not, I'll watch and make funny noises. In admiration! Like in the real WC!

(Note: if you choose to include me, you may want to give me a team you don't want to win, bcz I'm crap at determinatizing what's pop and not outside me brane)

count me in
