Poptimists Poll 2008: Lifetime Achievement Award

This is the last category we're polling - please please PLEASE take the time to send your Top 10 Tracks to leagueofpop@gmail.com though! Deadline on that is the start of next year.

This category has been won in the last two years by DEAD DUDES - James Brown and Tony Wilson. This year as far as I know no deaders were nominated so you get to cast your THREE votes across a wider range.

[Poll #1317285]

with an undertone of "Please stop now!"?

That's exactly how I nominated & voted

this was on my mind as i voted for morrissey.

There are one or two there for whom that may be true, but my votes went to people who may well make more terrific music.

Probably, but there's also a celebratory aspect to it, and the nominations which I'm most sure will never contribute anything worthwhile again are also those I least feel like celebrating (that feeling whereby their current negative traits seep retroactively back to infect their earlier 'better' stuff). So I guess I'm going for Madonna, who probably will be good again at some point but whose subpar offering this year didn't infect her back catalogue at all.

i have got a list of tracks now, i just need to trim it and then order it. i bet i've missed some rly obvious things off too, although the various "official" lists popping up on here have helped :)

Is Bruce Forsyth not dead yet then?

'Give It 2 Me' was SO AWFUL that I cannot bring myself to tick Madge, so Mariah and Britney are joined by a third GHOST TICK for Simon Cowell, because I predict there will be no X Factor in 2009 (at least in its current form).

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2008-12-18 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't mean they're going to use them! I think they're going to do something different with it at the very least. I was watching Cowell's face during Alex's victory dance and he seemed like he'd had enough - plus a few comments he made sounded rather... final.

I've heard he wants to stay behind the scenes, so perhaps the rumours of a new male judge (my bet's on Gary Barlow) is actually to replace him and not Dannii as some have said. I'm sure there will be another X Factor, as this year seems to have been one of the most successful in terms of the buzz around it, although that was mainly cos of Cheryl's arrival.

Whatever you think of Hard Candy (me - better than Confessions by a country mile) Madonna's back catalogue is better than everyone else's (bar Morrissey) put together. So TICK.

Miley almost got a metatick, which would be like a third-level pun (second-level = her "greatest hits" comp I put together after album 2, or rather 1.5, Mostly Wanted, punning on Hilary Duff's Most Wanted which was similarly premature...and of course now there is a DELUXE Most Wanted and another Hilary's greatest hits in the works. I just can't keep up with this stuff). But I don't want to do metaticks.

I picked Madonna because her relevance has finally peaked and faded, I think, and I don't think anyone could be a star quite like her again, since too many of her particular zeitgeists have burned out. I picked Max Martin because he's finally jumped the shark (actually it was "U and UR Hand," I think) which isn't to say he's finished. And Mariah Carey 'cuz she's finally a cartoon (and I don't see her ever fully getting over her Remake "We Belong Together" phase).

Britney, meanwhile, seems to be in a transitional phase to something, and I don't think she has a particularly coherent star image yet. There's a crackpot narrative or fifty to be spun, but I think we're only in the second act.

You think Max has jumped the shark? Really? I think he's tooling along like always; co-wrote the best (or second-best) track on the Vanessa Hudgens album, made Katy Perry vastly more catchy than she has any right to be, etc. Of course, Dr. Luke and Cathy Dennis are with him on those tracks, and it may well be that Luke and not Max are the key players. "U + Ur Hand" was simply he and Luke copying themselves (i.e., copying the Veronicas' "4ever"), which is a standard pop move (in fact, on the Veronicas' "Everything I'm Not" they copied Kelly Clarkson's "Behind These Hazel Eyes"). Maybe they should sue themselves.

Popjustice, because whilst in principle I stand with it and it is occasionally dead on still, it has basically lost it completely due to the advent of YouTube meaning it hardly even has to write about music anymore.

Grills Aloud because I nominated them.

Couldn't find a third thing to vote for.

I nominated Morrissey, but I'm perfectly happy to see Madonna win it. Britney Spears, on the other hand - ?????
