As with the album, most horrible and most interesting thing, you get THREE votes across all categories.

To make it easier for you, here's a PLAYLIST of all 17 of the videos:

[Poll #1316050]

Remember also that the TRACKS OF THE YEAR POLL is open until the end of the year. Send a list your 10 favourite tracks, in order, to leagueofpop@gmail.com - it's the work of a moment!

SO HARD. It's been a really good year for vids! I can't believe I had to leave out Mariah, Wiley, Kanye, H2O and Bouncy!

It really has been a great year for videos. I think Kanye and Erykah are shoe-ins for me, just for using the format so well, but I have to decide between Bouncy and Lil' Mama ('Shawty Get Loose') for the last tick - both have super-fun choreography, Lil' Mama wins on imagery (even though it's basically a Michael & Janet tribute) but the Bouncy video made the song significantly better for me, which I think might be the deciding factor.

oh HANG ON I forgot just how excellent that Ashanti video is. Bah.

Have you seen the original video that inspired the choreography (in large parts the moves are exactly the same) in the bouncy video:

Doesn't make Bouncy's any less good (it was my original nomination) but interesting to see anyway

Haha what, Bouncy is such a little tief! Shameless. (Doesn't make her any less good though, no.)

Oh, she's been quite open about it too

Over Thanksgiving my mom and I watched Sweet Charity and The Pajama Game, both choreographed by Bob Fosse. Despite the sentimentality of the plots, there's something really hard, almost angry, about the dancing. Which make the movements appropriate for Beyoncé, a woman both sentimental and stressed.

(Or so she portrays herself.)

Quite torn. Nearly picked "Shawty Get Loose", but the hilarious disconnect between the McFly song and video kind of swung that for me. Awesome!

"Something Good 08" is actually better than the original 12" version, if you ask me. And the video's more entertaining too.

That Ashanti video is so horrible I'm shuddering just picturing it. Gah.

Oh, and I would have picked Erykah Badu for the video alone, because hers is just fantastic (LOVE her mock-up of the '3 Feet High & Risin' cover!), but the other 3 had better songs to go with the vids, so y'know, it's that whole package thing.

(Argh. The poll was repeatedly fvcking about - kept taking me into someone else's poll on a different journal! - , and seems to have put my vote in for H20 and not McFly. GRRR. This is WRONG)

Strangely, when it comes to vids I tend to get either incorrigibly low rent (voted both for Spesh and Donk) or ridiculous (Kanye); if I'd nominated would have gone for stuff that might not be eligible: fan vids or boots or Taylor Swift's live "Take A Bow," just her and guitar delivering the song in a way that Rihanna and Ne-Yo couldn't, or maybe Taylor at the ACMs (high rent, out of tune, and extravagantly, audaciously ridiculous). However, Erykah was my number four; I like both the concept and execution but think that once you get the idea it doesn't maintain its impact over multiple viewings.

The Alphabeat vid makes me like the song less. Low-rent style can be a yes; antistyle is usually a no.

Went with Red Hot Entertainment (the video of which I remember liking more than the song, though I barely remember it otherwise) and Blackout Crew (the video of which I like *less* than the song, which will squeak into my Pazz & Jop singles ballot at #10.) Favorite video of the year by far, which isn't here, is Justin Moore's "Back That Thing Up." But then, I don't see many videos these days (including most of the ones listed above, which I may but probably won't try to catch up with so I can come up with a third vote.) (The Snoop one, which I have seen, is okay. And it should be noted that, though I basically have no use for Erykah Badu's music, I did vote for her "Next Lifetime" video as one of my favorite videos of whatever year it came out once upon a time.)

Actually, just gave my third vote to H20 feat Platinum, which I remember watching and liking over the summer. That one (and other ones) could change, though, if I get around to watching other ones.

Amazed that no one nominated "No Air."

90's nostalgia overload

McFly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byPmV-Zbmmk) is trying to be Backstreet Boys doing "Tank Girl," right?

And to do Mad Max 2/The Road Warrior (1981). Not to mention, for the music of the verse, "Fancy" (1970 and 1991), and of the chorus, "Over and Over" (1989 and 1987) and No Good To Cry (1967) [OK, that last one is a bit of a stretch, but I can hear it; anyway, worth listening to: white boys from Connecticut doing garage-rock soul, which maybe is forerunner to white guys New Kids and the Backstreet Boys and *NSync doing black and Hispanic based dance music off of New Edition and Bel Biv Devoe and freestyle etc, and now McFly rocking it up].

Again, I don't like anything here except what I nominated. I am not pleased!

[identity profile] ijgrieve.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
WTF? Did some people mistake this category for 'Biggest Bunch of Talentless Clowns'?

Blackout Crew?!?!?! Red Hot Entertainment - What the fuck was that????????

OK, I don't mind Mariah Carey too much, and Utah Saints is a damn good video and deserves 2nd place, but anyone not voting for Weezer - I demand an explanation!!!
