Another Year In Pop: 41

Pink is still at #1, MIA is still at #21, and after a fortnight of plenty this week's new entries are returning to a mere handful...

[Poll #1277707]
Baffling re-entry watch: Cyndi Lauper is in there at no.90 with 'True Colors'! Any ideas why?

Later on today I might post a round-up of the AYIP results for the year so far - remember you can go back and tick something in any of the polls, just click on the 2008 tag. If you want to untick something that's fine too! Click on the poll link (where it says e.g. 'Poll #39517958') then click 'Fill Out Poll' to withdraw that erroneous Katy Perry tick change your answers.

"Take Back the City" might just be 'any good at all' but SP are still serving a long sentence for past crimes, so no tick sorry.

I think ignoring this week is probably the best tactic to employ, really.

Actually I kind of like the Kaiser Chiefs song but I am not convinced that it is 'any good at all.'

TV. Always TV. A cover of the song is being used on an ad right now.

I should investigate Lauper's recent album tho - includes productions by B Jaxx, Dragonette AND Kleerup

Yup, it's the Sky HD ad. See what they did there.... True Colours? V. clever Mr. Murdoch.

The cover is sung by Norwegian, Ane Brun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ane_Brun).

You should definitely investigate the Lauper album, even though it lags after the first half. The second single, "Into The Nightlife," is ace, perfect combination of warped dance and straight pop.

"Tattoo" was released in March but only got to 50 or so (in U.S. was released in September '07, went top 10).

I think it's been hanging around the bottom half of the Top 75 on and off ever since.

I always find this sort of thing (chart slow burners and long-term hangers on) interesting. Shame the records in question are nearly always a bit meh.

Ticked the Kaisers and Snow Patrol. Neither of them are likely to figure in any end-of-year chart of mine, but both are easily 'any good at all'.

Jordin Sparks wasn't too far away, especially considering how much I despise 'No Air'. It starts off strongly but has a crap slushy chorus, so just missed out.

Courteeners was never in it.

Kaisers' Intro

Remind anyone else of The Wannadies 'Hit'?

While Britain leads in financial policy, it lags in Jordin Sparks releases.

Kaiser Chiefs "Never Miss A Beat": Every day I like them less and less. I mean, their jokes used to be funny. But they're still catchy. BORDERLINE TICK.

Snow Patrol "Take Back The City": Earnest, glum mediocrity. NO TICK.

Jordin Sparks "Tattoo": Caramel coating on a voice that resolutely says it's not regretful, while conveying pang after pang of regret. TICK.

The Courteeners "That Kiss": Character actor, rumpled and draggy, reflects wistfully on brief, discarded dalliance. NO TICK.

The KC tunes are still catchy, that is. Not their humor.

Oh, I should have written this about the Couteeners: "Dope in the Courteeners once kissed a girl, still can't figure out if he liked it. NO TICK."

Cyndi Lauper was on Graham Norton this week and there was a section where her fans sang some of her hits. 'True Colours' was the most heavily featured, with the entire audience singing along.
