I like this, best of the new tracks I hadn't heard before. Shows she can get serious with the identical yammer that she uses to get funny.

Is Lil Mama still streaming the whole of her album bar about 2 tracks on her MySpace page? I keep meaning to blog this on poptimists but I've been too busy.

I only see about four tracks on the MySpace. This and "College" are back to back on the album, a nice two-punch of the serious Mama.

I like the album but am mildly disappointed in that my four favorites were four I'd already heard before: "Shawty Get Loose," "Lip Gloss," "G-Slide," and "On Fire," the last of which is a bonus track that may only be on the deluxe edition. "L.I.F.E." would be number five, and it's pretty good for a number five. I'd been wondering if you could carry a whole album with her voice, and I think the answer is yes, though I shrugged at the two tracks where she sings without rapping (though she does a nice job singing the chorus on "L.I.F.E."). Storch track is kind of meh, too. (The one with his writing credit, anyway. I haven't seen production credits.)

"Girlfriend" is a bonus track, at least according to my promo copy. "Umbuberella" not here.

Subquestion: are there other teen-oriented life-in-the-hood downer R&B or hip-hop tracks anyone can think of from the past three years or so besides this (which is amazing; I like it better than several of the tracks Frank sez he likes better), Keke Palmer ("Music Box," "Hood Anthem"), and Karina Pasian ("16 at War")? I'm guessing there must be (need to look into Tiffany Evans and the rest of the Webstar/Young B album, for instance). I ask because I'm pretty sure it's the Future of Music for the time being.

By "teen-oriented" do you mean by teens or about teens? "Music Box" is more about the momma who's scrubbing than about the teen who's narrating it, I think. And there are plenty of songs by former teens about what it was like growing up in the ghetto, Naughty By Nature's "Ghetto Bastard (Everything's Gonna Be Alright)" for instance, and Ludacris's "Runaway Love." And probably another couple of thousand, like that City High song that someone was complaining about in the previous thread.

Yeah, I'm sure you can go back and find a ton -- I'm talking about by teenage girls singing about their own issues, and I'm interested in it as a sort of recent trend thing -- the sort of category you'd write an ill-thought-out thinkpiece in the NYT about, say. (And I think it counts ven if, like Keke, they get a little abstract about their issues...though she's definitely going more straightforwardly autobiographical in "Hood Anthem").

(The Lil Mama track is terrific, really amped for the album now. on first listen a track as serious as this is a bit of a curveball but it actually fits really well into what I've come to expect from her.)
