I always figured it was to make people feel better about the fact they haven't got a clue what's new and exciting out there anymore cos look, they already own anything that's any good. The lists say so...

I think that would be right if this was Radio 2, but on Radio 1 I think something a bit more subtle's going on - they're trying to remind their listeners, who never buy CDs anymore, that the album itself is a good idea and is the format that produces 'masterpieces'.

Yes! That's probably where I heard it too. TBF, the argument was something like "we put a lot of work into the running order, please at least give us a chance to show you our concept, even if you only listen to the whole thing once".

But they weren't offering refunds if you decided you only liked two of the songs, I noticed.

The Raconteurs said something similar:

"The band also prefer that fans buy the album as a whole instead of breaking up the tracks, but until iTunes and other digital services allows bands to release their albums with the option of NOT breaking it up, it will be sold in that fashion on those particular sites. On the band's website however, the album will be sold in its entirety as an mp3 at 320kb bit rate."

TBF most of the tracks are pretty good, in my opinion. But it's no Dark Side Of The Moon.

I listened to the PE show today and posted a lot on the facebook messageboard as it was playing and got friended by three people...the point is to build community & reinforce it too - one commenter said that Radio 1 never played anything from it at the time, that it was about time it got some respect...
