I'm interested in the implication that the cantina band were playing anything that had any relevance to the 1977 musical scene - please explain.

The Cantina Band tracks were jazz-age/swing nostalgia, tricked up with mildly strange arrangements (steel drums!) and that's that!

If he was making SW today, I believe Lucas would've had the band play eighties-nostalgia manqué...because if he was making it in (say) 1982, he'd make the band play actual "eighties" music. See?

If he were making it today it would be a couple of aliens trying to harmonize a karaoke version of the Beach Boys' "Surfin Safari," though not in English.
