Pop Open 00s RESULTS & even MOAR details.

Results for the 00s group - good turnout and very close:

FIRST PLACE: NOZE - "Remember Love" (8 first place votes, 35% of total points) - [livejournal.com profile] w3ft WINS.

SECOND PLACE: PENDULUM - "Hold Your Colour" (7 first place votes, 28% of total points) - [livejournal.com profile] piratemoggy QUALIFIES.

THIRD PLACE: RISKAY - "Smell Yo Dick" (6 first place votes, 23% of total points) - [livejournal.com profile] alexmacpherson is OUT.

FOURTH PLACE: GLASS CANDY - "Candy Castle" (1 first place vote, 14% of total points) - [livejournal.com profile] kill_yr_idols is OUT.

Congrats and commiserations to the excellent competitors.

The 3rd round will start later this week with [livejournal.com profile] mackromackro vs [livejournal.com profile] credoimprobus - both have got me their tracks, as have [livejournal.com profile] infov0re and [livejournal.com profile] byebyepride: thanks to all.

I need tracks, in MP3 format, no theme, pick anything you like, from [livejournal.com profile] w3ft, [livejournal.com profile] hauntedballroom, [livejournal.com profile] lockedintheatti, [livejournal.com profile] piratemoggy, [livejournal.com profile] cis, [livejournal.com profile] stevem78, [livejournal.com profile] umlauts and [livejournal.com profile] anatol_merklich - I will email to remind later in the week. Tracks to leagueofpop@gmail.com please!

I'll be moving through the third round at a fair clip. Winners of the 3rd round bouts will then have a very brief time to submit a track for the 4th round, where the theme is WINTER (including Christmas or not, as you wish). I'll probably do that as one big batch of six. The theme for the final will be VICTORY.

Alex absolutely ROBBED there! Which was Noze again?

[identity profile] braisedbywolves.livejournal.com 2007-11-26 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, after I posted I realised I could just go listen to it again. Still slightly mystified.

Yeah but in fairness it had three "Heard it"s to Pendulum's four.

Bah, 'Remember Love' was the one on my shortlist I thought wouldn't do as well :(

I actually prefer 'Remember Love' to 'Smell Yo Dick', which I have kind of...grown off since I submitted it! I mean, it's that kind of really obvious oddball humour which appeals to, well, ilx types, but there's so much playing-it-for-laughs going on that the song itself suffers. Really should have gone for 'Nasty Bitch' by Trina, which I'd settled on ages ago (and which I ended up not submitting as "too obviously me") - has the same WTF factor as 'Smell Yo Dick' but less of the wacky novelty; by being a hard-ass instead of a comic, Trina ends up being funnier.

I knew it had been all over the blogosphere but I thought this wouldn't matter (and it nearly didn't!) as poptimists have a pretty poor record of hearing new stuff.

Also I much preferred the League of Pop...it's simultaneously harder and more constraining trying to pick tracks for everyone, and I thought the League threw up a lot more interesting choices. For the Pop Open, I kept coming up against tracks I really wanted specific people to hear, which they would have loved, but knowing that too many other people already knew it, or would have hated it. Like...I could never have submitted 'Relevee' in the Pop Open but it was a triumph in the League when I picked it for Mark S.

I didn't like 'Smell Yo Dick' at all. novelty wore off after 30 seconds ala Eamon.

Cor, really didn't think was going to get through with that (assumed a lot of people would know it) so that's quite ace really. Commiserations to [livejournal.com profile] alexmacpherson and [livejournal.com profile] kill_yr_idols, I thought this round was the best set of songs so far.

Pendulum are kn0bs, really they are but the album is the most hilarious boyband romp. 'Hold Your Colour' is one of the few songs I'd still voluntarily listen to, having hammered the CD into the ground over the last three years, mostly because it's essentially a big comfort rock ballad with some coincidental electronics. Also, it would sound IMMENSE if covered by Girls Aloud.

Noze was my favourite, have played it roughly 2869845987 times since downloaded it.

I have to say the Pendulum has quite possibly been my favourite entry in the entire Open so far, so I'm very glad it went through! I had it on repeat forever at work today.

Excited abt the 3rd round! *bites nails* (And for once getting my track in early didn't mean having to wait forever to see how I'll do, haha.)

It's insane that I was allowed to get this far in the Open!

That said, I could play these types of competitions until my grave. This is so fun! What have I been missing?? ;_;

Also, I hope my earlier comments about "smell yo dick" being all over the net didn't unfairly sway the votes in a certain way. That wasn't my intent at all!

Finally listened to these too late to vote. I like all of them, don't think I've heard any, though "Remember Love" sounds very familiar, as if it were a cover or a joke remix with new words. I'm only on the second listen through; I don't think the Riskay track is particularly a joke; nastiness with prettiness attached is standard stuff in r&b these days. I'd probably put it third place simply because there's been prettier pretties and angrier angries recently. But it did make me smile. "Remember Love" might have finished last for me, owing to its weak vocals, but as it went on it built up the feeling, so later listens might make me like it more. Pendulum sounded impossibly static at the start, the repetitively circular piano pulling the music into quicksand, but then the beats come in and totally manhandled this, paradoxically making the beauty far more effective. Then there's Glass Candy, which finished last and is my favorite by far with its slow-motion fanfares and the out-of-tune sorrowful everywoman narrating. Warms me in many ways. So, this vote of thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kill_yr_idols.
