wow, shocked at this - i was sure most people would know Berlin.

Well I knew it was a risk - I based my gamble on the fact that I'd never heard it until I downloaded it some point last year, which meant that the chances are most Anglo voters under the age of 33 were also unlikely to have heard it. But I've no idea how popular it was at the time - I vaguely had the impression it was a big tune in the US, but from looking at the comments when I posted it, mystification and enlightenment were fairly evenly distributed across the globe.

I was out-of-town, so I didn't have a chance to really listen to this set. I didn't realize [livejournal.com profile] justfanoe had submitted Tom Petty - I had considered using "Breakdown" as my pick for the '70s round (though it appears here that I would have fared even worse than I did).

Clearly, my Tom Petty submission strategy did not unlock a secret door to organfun success.

Well, it got my vote, and one other person's, I think.

Lex's vote, surely

The Tom Petty song was my favorite of the four, but I had heard it before.

It's easy for me to assume Berlin were huge globally.. and they did become big all over the U.S. with "Take My Breath Away", but the more tinny synth stuff from prior years was only well known, I think, in the West Coast, or maybe just California, or maybe just L.A.!
