Year In Pop, week #36

Hello chaps, just filling in for one more week because I am a jobless bum and [livejournal.com profile] freakytigger is not. Bit odd this week insofar as am including The Freaks, who seem to have previously slipped through the polling net and also I'm not convinced we haven't polled Peter, Bjorn and John before although maybe that was with a different single, since I checked back and couldn't see it.

[Poll #1053518]

Will edit in some Youtube links in a minute. :)

Girls Aloud
Elvis
The Freaks
Pavarotti
Editors
Booty Luv
P, B & J ft. her from The Concretes

An End Has A Start

Profound title lads, good work there.

So 'Young Folks' is going to get WORST SINGLE OF THE YEAR two years running then? That song is utterly repellent.

I hate 'Nessun Dorma'. Because of football, mostly, but I am a bit prejudiced against "light classics" generally.

Girls Aloud are great, the punctuation is lame.

Booty Luv, stay the fuck away from Lucy Pearl!

I think Young Folks is overplayed to the point of atrophy, but it's a good record.

Not a patch on Sexy! No No No which I now consider a phenomenal achievement fit to stand beside Biology and Love Machine... The creepy intro! The banging middle bit! The bit where it turns into a normal pop record and back in about five seconds! Brilliant.

GA 'any good at all' only, sry. YF is annoying for bubbling around for so long, but has been any good all that time.

Track by Track

Editors - well I've heard worse. His voice is way less annoying than the busker-indie lot. I imagine he is trying to sound like Ian Curtis, yes? Fair enough. This isn't interesting enough to get a tick, but I must say the video is pretty rubbish. Why bother having dancing chaps if it is too dark to see them? Or is this one of the nu-raves the kids are attending? Whatevs.

Pav - NO TICKY, this song annoys me because it's still in copyright and as such it has one of the highest mis-match rates at work and I'm sick of having to amend the errors all the time.

Booty - Hurray! Good old Booty Luv, I really like this (can't recall the original version, sorry Lex) and the video is good too. They seem to be thoroughly enjoying themselves & the execution is crisp and bouncy. TICK.

Girls - It's not as good as Something Kinda Ooh, but it's still good: messy, clicky, boshing, nonsensical, spooky intro. I'm still not 100% convinced by the video but hey, it's Girls Aloud, their videos are always a bit off.

The Freaks - as discussed last week, I much prefer the original with the different filter vocal. This one is better than the Fedde Le Grand mashup but still no ticky.

Elvis - never liked this one much.

PBJ - Oh it's THIS one. Yeah it's alright - I like the whistling. Video annoys me though and the singing is a bit wussy. Marginal TICK.

Editors track sounds an awful lot like Kitchens Of Distinction, which is at least a semi-good thing.

Is this the first instance of 'signature song of recently deceased popstar makes chart purely on downloads'? Wouldn't have had money on this one.

This applies to Mark Ronson too though.

i still like 'Munich' and 'Bullets' but the rest can die.

i think Mood II Swing did a housey remix of the Lucy Pearl at the time anyway - see if that's better than Booty Luv

Moggy remember to tag this one!

I've quite enjoyed hearing 'Nessun Dorma' again to be honest.

'Sexy Hey Nonny No' has one of the best intros this year, still wish it did something different to what it does after this - something slower and funkier like an updated Mania's 'If You Need A Good Girl' would really have floated my boat.

Where is Nessun Bosha band?

I am not 'feeling' Sexy No No No but I think this is because 90% of the times I've heard it it's been sitting in the studio in my parents' French house looking at frogs and cows. Maybe I will listen to it on the way to COOLBRANDS 0708.

You have to hear the original of the Booty Luv song - it is incredible, one of my fave R&B songs ever (sung by 'er what used to be in En Vogue). Well worth tracking down if you like this version,

Have there been any other widely-reported popstar deaths since the new chart rules though? It will be interesting what happens when someone with a much bigger back catalogue (of well-known stuff) snuffs it.

I didn't like it until Poptimism when suddenly I loved it, so clearly it passes the test.

And so it does, now that I've listened to it again. But many nations have been born since the time when I would have taken that as an endorsement.

'Sexy Hey Nonny No': Tee hee!

And I'm with you on the intro - it's a bit of a shame that no more is made of it than what's there, but I'd rather they left me wanting more than completely bled the idea dry, I s'pose. Still a great song, any which way.
