OK so the weather may be VILE outside but it is June so we should at least have the opportunity to pretend it's summer. And nothing is better for that than this year's dancehall smash, 'Whine Up' by Kat DeLuna and Elephant Man.

This is exactly the kind of music which perfectly encapsulates summer for me, I would not mind if every pop song in the future was made along these lines. Kat D reminds me a little of Christina Milian, she has that same vibe of...looking kittenish, but you know that she's in charge and secretly a TIGER. Anyway if you don't find the basic elements of the song and the video deeply satisfying - the pitch-shifting synth, the lyrics about how great dancing is, the dancing itself (when I first heard this song I started dancing along about two lines in), then, I dunno, you are 1XFOOL.

EDIT ooh and more along these lines - the return of LUMIDEE! I am sure you all remember her from having made probably the best single of this decade, 'Never Leave You', and she is BACK BACK BACK - no longer a chubby girl singing out of tune but a fully fledged reggaeton diva with Pitbull in tow. Best bit in the video = when she keeps it moving after discovering her boy with another girl.

Sadly the intervention of Elephant Man made me stop watching that (that is Elephant Man, right? otherwise this is going to be embarassing) because something about the man makes me die. However, when I fastforwarded to the chorus I thought it was good.

Why do people insist on putting Elephant Man on otherwise perfectly good records? It really is unnecessary.

Remind me to link to the most outrageously unneccesary Elephant Man cameo ever tomorrow.

OK the Kat DeLuna track is seriously odd. In the bridge leading up to the chorus it threatens to turn into a Kelly Clarkson-like shoutathon - and then deftly steps back into dancehall mode. I think I like it.

The Lumidee is GREBT! What is the title? Neither your post or the video says! Is it just "Keep it Movin'"? The beat reminds me a bit of one or more of the latin-flavoured tracks on last year's Pitbull album. I'm wondering if one of the producers on that LP is involved here...

Very weird - there's a rap in the middle that I'm sure is by Ivy Queen and in the vid the rapper is hooded: but then she sheds the hood, and it turns out to be Kat. (In the video, anyway; I still believe it's Ivy Queen's voice.)

Kat's voice is very '80s, like Lisa Lisa and ilk, achy and feisty, which I think is quite fine. Sorta what the song is like, actually, whining up and then winding up into brashness; so, lovely aahs and pangs and then twists and snarls and hollers.
