A Year In Pop: Week 11

A NEW ENTRY at #1!!!! Well, OK, the new rules haven't really been in place long enough for us to get excited about that again, but it's the Comic Relief single straight in. Also: a chance to decide between original re-issue and comedy version of "500 Miles", and an astonishing tide of haircut indie.

[Poll #950304]

* left off last week's poll - in the case of Madness this single has now left the building/chart.

My first DON'T LIKE ANY OF 'EM

What a vile list!

I don't mind the Crystal Waters thing but can't be bothered to tick it, my new standards for Any Good At All are "actively want to listen to again", and it doesn't qualify.

That apart it's not even mild meh about these songs, it's active...just the emere idea of any of the other songs EXISTING is enough to make me angry and also a bit nauseous. There are NO REDEEMING QUALITIES whatsoever, and NO EXCUSES to tick them.

I'm enjoying your slow realisation that the charts are no longer for you. It's the first step on your journey to becoming an Old Person.

There are 11 songs I like in the charts which is only slightly less than it's always been, the charts are fine.

What is not fine is that the Poptimists community seems to prefer Maximo Park to P Diddy and Keyshia Cole. BADLY DONE.

agreed re Gaudino, nice as it is to have Waters back (she sounds weird tho)

the video for the songs beats Fedde Le Grande in the 'ohhhh i knoooow let's get a load of models to dress in v short skirts and show their bottoms to the camera' tho

Return of the Benassi!

What? The Rakes single is fab; I also rather like the Maximo Park, but am finding Perm-ellis very, very tiring.

The Twang: I always expect it to be a James song; the reverby guitar, the rhythms; it takes about five seconds for me to realise "oh, no, it's the twang").

Refuse to tick "Walk This Way", much like katstevens. And refuse to tick novelty Proclaimers covers/remixes.

The guy from the Rakes sounds like he's trying to sound like the bloke from Maximo Park on this record, which is odd as he sounded quite different on the last album.

And the other reason to like the Twang is they have a 'Bez' - he doesn't play anything, just appears to dance around a bit and supply some 'oh-ohs' in the chorus.

the Maximo Park track reminds me of LCD Soundsystem's 'Movement' only not as good so no tick. also i can't stand the lead singer's hairstyle.

I didn't know you all liked the Proclaimers.

I hate 500 Miles with a passion.

I dislike 500 Miles with a nonpassion; could've been good w/ someone else singing it. In fact, I almost ticked the remake.

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2007-03-20 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't bring myself to tick 'Walk This Way'.

The Proclaimers are wonderful though!

Not heard any of the others, apart from Maximo Park and the Fratellis who are both rub.

Am I imagining it, or has there been an awful lot of this (in one week, gone the next) happening in the last few weeks?

I thought the new chart rules were supposed to reduce the level of Top 40 turnover but, ignoring Snow Patrol*, it seems to be as high as it ever was of late.

*and who doesn't?

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2007-03-20 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Maximo Park have one astonishing single (Apply Some Pressure) but everything else I've heard has been k-rub so I'm willing to write that one off as a fluke.

I have no desire whatsoever to hear the record but Lex, did you know that Sophie R's cousin is on The Rakes album?

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2007-03-20 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, I didn't, it kind of doesn't surprise me though.

Btw Tom you forgot the new Pink single in the top 40, not that it's remotely good or anything (probably the best this week though).

March Madness

First week in January was way better than this one.

presence of a synth bass line is not sufficient

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2007-03-20 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
at least not in the case of this Maximo Park song. I am surprised that even this many people have fallen for it.

[identity profile] piratemoggy.livejournal.com 2007-03-21 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
Good Shoes sounds like Maximo Park being good, Maximo Park sound like Maximo Park being alright.

Girls Aloud and Sugababes is just cringey. It's too good to be comedy and yet the song's so completely inappropriate, it's still bad. Girl group members rapping should be banned but it is also just a massive disappointment.
