Jop Tournament: Quarter Finals

Shave your head and get ahead! Britney pulled level with the Pets on the final vote leaving NINE tracks still in the running for today's poll (with bonus diagnostic questions!)

[Poll #930437]

Have at it! The semi-finals will be on Wednesday most likely.

(for certain values of 'own')

I took the "paid money" approach, too.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
LEGAL MONEY: Into The Groove, West End Girls, Get Ur Freak On
PROMO: Toxic
STOLEN FROM LIBRARY: Don't You Want Me
ON OLD-SKOOL HIP-HOP COMPILATION I THINK I STOLE FROM MY SISTER: Push It
DOWNLOADED: Billie Jean, Buffalo Stance

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
haha I dunno how many of these I own. I feel as if I own them all though, even if it's only on obscure cassette compilations that I haven't played in eons

But def own Madonna, "Don't Stop Til...", Neneh (all on vinyl), plus Missy on CD. "Toxic" I copied & burned from a library CD of Britney's Greatest Hits.

Schoolboy Error!

[livejournal.com profile] dubdobdee, that's "Work It" you're thinking of!

i had to change my vote a couple times. into the groove is in the end better than don't you want me, but that (DYWM) has the best BELT IT OUT words. WEG has the best lyrics in the abstract.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
They all have pretty good words! I think only Toxic and DSTYGE can be ruled out on that count. I chose Into The Groove on the basis that its lyrics = my life philosophy. Don't You Want Me and Billie Jean are the best narratives, West End Girls the most evocative, Get Ur Freak On the most linguistically inventive and nonsensical.

stevem wins the worst cover q

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Do we get a prize for the official worst cover idea?

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
This was prompted by the fact I have actually witnessed the Eels covering Get Yr Freak On. It was horrendous.

It was either that or the Flaming Lips doing Toxic, which I am 100% certain already exists.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You witnessed this...meaning you were at an Eels gig??!!!!!

YOU DESERVE EVERYTHING YOU GET.

[identity profile] awesomewells.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I was walking past the stage at a festival and they were on it murdering Get Yr Freak On.

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I am finding this very difficult indeed! I don't know whether to go with my heart or my head (e.g. I *know* that I have enjoyed Get Yr Freak On more than Jacko but which do I prefer *today*?) and I might have to abstain on some of them.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually am finding it easier and easier: the quality is so superlative now, only one song I'm meh on left, but I am very certain about which songs are x-x-x-x-x-x-xtra special to me, and luckily none came up against each other in this round. Really, I didn't hesitate about any of these.

Good q's today

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
btw! Not sure why I felt more engaged on them today, but there you have it.

Well, we haven't had them previously on this, have we?

Respectability

[personal profile] koganbot 2007-02-19 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Reason I chose Guillemots doing "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" as worst possible cover version is that I could not only imagine them hitting with it but also a significant number of you lot ticking it in a "Which one of these are any good at all?" poll.
koganbot: (Default)

For those of you who voted "West End Girls"...

[personal profile] koganbot 2007-02-19 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
...If WEG hadn't been in the running, would you vote have voted "Toxic" or "Push It"?

Also, those of you (e.g., me) who voted WEG in the last round, whom did you vote for in this one? (I voted "Push It.")

Re: For those of you who voted "West End Girls"...

[identity profile] martinskidmore.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd have gone for Toxic ahead of Push It (voted WEG both times).

Odd fact

[personal profile] koganbot 2007-02-19 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
As of right now, if you eliminate the first ten voters, "Billie Jean" and "Buffalo Stance" are in a tie!

Turns out there's no such thing as bad publicity.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
'Push It' is the only song not to be mentioned in the "which is worst" box.

And it's not winning its poll!

[identity profile] justfanoe.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Similarly:

"Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" is the only song to not get a vote for best lyrics. The votes for "Toxic" and "Into the Groove" I do not understand AT ALL.

Every song has been voted for best to dance to and worst cover, though why "West End Girls" for best to dance to I again do not understand at all.

[identity profile] justfanoe.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I should say, the votes for "Toxic" and "Push It" I do not understand at all. I definitely understand the votes for "Into the Groove". My bad.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
i was ABOUT TO SAY!

i don't understand people who don't like to dance.

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Toxic has GREAT lyrics. Endless variations on a single idea (love is the drug), true, but that's exactly what I like about them.

The meter of the words also naturally fit the beat as well. (Contrast with the clumsiness of e.g. "either with or with A-choo" in "Don't You Want Me".)

[identity profile] justfanoe.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it has bad lyrics, mind you, I just don't see why you would pick them over "Into the Groove" or "Billie Jean" or "Don't You Want Me".

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Why I am surprised that "Don't You Want Me" and "Into the Groove" are level-pegging?

so much for the hot pop sound of 2007

three artists have received more than one nomination in the Horrible Cover Version category: James Rhyming Slang (obv), Morrissey (OBV)...and Mika! Heh. In yr FACE you smug bastard.
