Date: 2007-02-17 07:04 pm (UTC)The thing with these pop stars is that doing crazy messed-up things is kind of partly what makes them fabulous and compelling to watch, and part of what makes their peaks so very satisfying, so you take a morbid fascination in their antics and then something like this happens and you're just like "BRITNEY PLEASE GET SOME HELP".

Difference between the way that the press treats Urban isn't only 'cause he's a guy, but because he says all the right things (regrets letting Nicole and everyone down, knows he's going to pull through with all their support). Don't know if he's famous for partying, since I don't pay that much attention to the tabs, and he's a celeb in people but not the other sixteen trashier 'bloids. Also, I think there's a double standard for men and woman here, as elsewhere. (By the way, "Stupid Boy" is quite beautiful, didn't make my country ballot but was in my country top 20.)
Strangely, I have no recall - and may never even have known at the time - when Keith Richards and Eric Clapton and John McVie and Lou Reed etc. etc. etc. (not to mention Parker, Coltrane, Davis, et al.) went deeply into addiction and when they got over it, and what was happening in their music at the various times; think Clapton only got clean after Derek & the Dominoes, which is to say after all the work that has made him a legend (haven't heard enough of his later stuff to know if its general dismissal by critics is justified). I think Richards was a hardcore junkie by about '72, which is when the Stones' riffs and melodies got a lot more boring and they became a good groove band rather than the great song band (w/ good grooves) they'd been previously; but then, Jagger's singing went from intense to far less intense right around the same time, which Keith's drug taking wasn't responsible for.
Addiction has its own logic and isn't necessarily correlated to a propensity to party.
