Jop Tournament Qualifiers 7

The penultimate qualifying groups - not much more to say other than go and vote in them!

Winners of the fifth batch include: Eminem's "Real Slim Shady" in the closest qualifying group ever (top vote - 15, bottom vote - 12); Kelis trouncing the opposition; "Vogue" squeaking past Chic, and the Spice Girls enjoying a late surge to take them past Gwen and Portishead.

[Poll #913748]

Tomorrow's final groups include three Jop poll winners, erm and some other stuff.

Z is the hardest group yet!!!!

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
White Stripes or Cyndi Lauper, right? ;)

[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Man I was TOTALLY torn between MIA and Stardust. I went for MIA in the end because I thought that ppl would vote for Stardust anyway. But NOES I think I might have to change my vote, Stardust is better... BUT IS IT Argh.

Also tricky: Missy vs Dre&Tupac. Missy gets it for the "BEEP BEEP, WHO GOT THE KEYS TO THE JEEP? BRRRRRRRRM".

Botherd about the rest.

Yes, going for the 'underdog' (against what I preceive the poptimist mass will go for) is something I happen to be doing at times (it happened with Portishead yesterday, but not this time).

Adventures In Editorial

Only three s's in Kris Kross. (I know this 'cause I originally got it wrong in my book.)

Re: Adventures In Editorial

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember having a MASSIVE argument with this girl in primary school over this - we both had Kris(s) Kross written on our pencilcases, hers was spelt wrong, I pointed it out. I WON by bringing in my copy of Smash Hits the next day to prove it.

Is anyone else marvelling at a mental image of Young Lex with his coat on back-to-front?

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Y: Grace v Kanye GAAHHH!!!!! No way I can actively choose - was leaning towards Kanye for "Serena Trina Jennifer Lopez" but Grace is more the underdog. May well switch allegiance though I'd be happy with anything here going through, there are no evils.

Z: GAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!! MIA v Stardust v Cyndi! Narrowed down to MIA and Cyndi even if "music sounds better with you" is the most romantic phrase I have ever heard in a pop song ever; going with MIA because 'Time After Time' has never been the soundtrack to an entire summer. If the White Stripes look at all like winning at any point I WILL switch.

Alpha: GAAAAHHHHH!!!!! Oh man these are all really really sodding hard. Pac v Missy? Pac v Missy? That piano versus that...everything? Everything beats piano, also Missy is funnier, also BEEP BEEP, who got the keys to my JEEP? Vrrrooommmm.

Beta: Thank the lord for an easy one. Gorgeous lovely 'Little Red Corvette'. Franz Ferdinand - get the fuck outta here bitches.

[identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
This is as it should be, except the WRONG SONG is lagging behind :(

(quite impressed with staying power of 'Jump'! I thought it would have been forgotten by most, but obv not.)

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
why forgotten? it is a timeless wonder

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
A timeless what?

I have to see these votes as "I will always vote for hip-hop over anything else" votes.

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't imagine any other reason to vote for it. -ugh-

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
mainly the second one for me

'little red corvette' is a great song but not one of my favourite Princ singles oddly.

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
thinking about 'Little Red Corvette' as a title has got me wondering about using brand names in song titles. i'd like to talk about this more (probably on ILX). i wonder if it'd be something interesting for the radio show too.

suggested method

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
1) think of and list songs with brands in the title
2) try and find the earliest examples of the phenomenon in the process
3) focus on the sillier or more unusual examples (if taking it to radio)
4) draw conclusions (how/when is it good/bad etc.)
5) do a poll to see which ones were most successful or are best as songs (poptimists only)

Cadillacs not on 22s, or the radio

[personal profile] koganbot 2007-01-25 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Back in '55, BBC wouldn't play Chuck Berry's "Maybellene" 'cause the mention of a Cadillac and a V-8 Ford violated BBC's no-endorsements policy, hence a delay in the triumph of rock 'n' roll in Britain.

that's the kind of thing i'm interested in, partly because presumably at that point the idea of mentioning the brand in the title hadn't come through yet?

it's as if mentioning a brand in your verses is more acceptable than putting it in the title. the more i think about it the more i wonder if Prince really pushed something through there (there could be so many earlier instances tho, i just can't think of them at the mo).

it never occurred to me that Corvette had a previous association tho (again just because I never thought about it and hadn't come across the word in any other context other than a type of American sports car) as a type of boat. so song titles featuring an ORIGINAL brand name would perhaps be even more interesting to look at and focus on.

Early '60s there were a whole series of cars and motorbikes in music (including the Storey Sisters great, generic "Bad Motorcycle," with the great line "He's a bad motorcycle," i.e., a good-bad sexy boy who rides a motorcycle), Hondas and Cobras and GTOs making it into song titles. I doubt that there were any endorsement deals or payoffs, since the records were piggybacking on the youth popularity of the automobiles rather than vice versa (or a symbiosis, anyway).

I wish there were more of those votes around! The only possible voter who might fit that criterion is me and I didn't tick it.

i will always vote for krs krs over anything else

[identity profile] dubdobdee.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
i am actually a bit of a kneejerk hiphop voter PROVIDED THERE IS NO AWESOME POPMETAL nearby

that's excellent! because there NEVER IS

BETA is the only group so far to which my reaction is "bothered". I ticked ver Kross in the end, but with no real enthusiasm.

Never seen the appeal of Little Red Corvette. In melodic/hookiness terms, it's rubbish.

[identity profile] cis.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
both Z and ALPHA were so so so hard! I still may end up changing my mind again on them.

Re: Interesting...

i just couldn't do it :-(

Re: 20ish vote outlook

The "boredom" factor hurting Stardust, I have to imagine.

Good logic on the Franz fans. I really wanted to vote for it (same logic as GnR, ie, too many riffs too ignore) but I couldn't do it.

Group Y - Like but not love all 4. "BOB" gets my tick here

Group Z - Came down to "Time After Time" v. White Stripes and, apologies to Lex, but I went with the Stripes. Very catchy and with a nice guitar and just seems to be more original and rare than "Time After Time"

Group ALPHA - Voted Daft Punk. Another like but not love group that features a mid tier Daft Punk single and a mid tier Missy single along with some good mid 90s rap. Meh.

Group BETA - The hardest group yet, I think. I seriously deliberated for ticking all 4 of these choices. All 10/10 songs, eek. I voted for "Little Red Corvette", one of my favorite (maybe my favorite) Prince singles

[identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Dr Dre and Tupac - California Love
4 (16.0%)

Missy Elliott - The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)
11 (44.0%)
