Absolute hats off to byebyepride here, who spotted that Steps were grebt as soon as he first heart 5-6-7-8, and predicted their excellence to a sceptical me.

I do not think I have ever heard Steps doing "I Know Him So Well" - BLIMEY.

"One For Sorrow" is the peak surely.

And you can get all their albums for about £1.99 a go in charity shops these days, if you look hard enough! It's great for late-starting poptimists like myself.

I actually have the unpleasant feeling I may have shoplifted 'After The Love Has Gone' on tape, rather than, as I claimed above, paid money for it. If someone could suggest a suitable pop penance, I am now older and wiser-ish and see What I Have Done.

- Lee was 'accidentally' a big r4c1st: "Foreign people and people from ethnic minorities should all go home so that there can be more jobs for proper English people." STEPS responded that the quote was taken out of context.
- Steps supported Britney on one of her US tours.
- 5,6,7,8 is the highest selling single not to reach the top 10, thanks to its inclusion on Dance Dance Revolution
- Steps got their very own Brit award for Best Selling Live Act after being ROBBED of the Best Newcomer award the year previous by none other than Bell End Sebastiang.
- Claire used to go to school in Ruislip, our school regularly beat hers at netball

Also: all the singles from One For Sorrow onwards made the top 5. Last Thing On My Mind got to no 6. Apparently only the Beatles, Oasis and Girls Aloud have managed 14 consecutive top 5 hits. Blimezor. (I wuv wikipedia)

"5-6-7-8" is a trillion times better than "One For Sorrow." No. That is an exaggeration. But it is eight times better than "One For Sorrow." (Those are the only two I've heard.)

1. They were a LOT more like Abba in the early days (post their linedancing phase anyway) than I remembered.

2. The five I ticked earlier are indeed the best ones (phew).

3. "Stomp", which I only ticked reluctantly cos our then secretary at work loved it at the time, is WAY better than I remembered*. As good as the 70s disco it was imitating. (* I think had some rockist hang up about the fact that it was ripping off another song or summat.)

Tina's version is crap anyway.

Even if you love the tacky day-glo pop, and I do, "One For Sorrow" reigns supreme above all of those, quite apart from that, a shimmering masterpiece. That said, "Tragedy" reigns even higher than that. Best pop song ever written, FACT - best out-and-out pop single of 79 (or whatever year it was) AND 99.

Hmm... This is easily my favorite by them - very surprised it's not getting more votes.

On the other hand, the only other songs of their's I can remember now are 5-6-7-8 and Tragedy and vague visions of the Deeper Shade of Blue video (though I can't remember the song at all). And I thought I quite liked them!

(BTW, despite how grebt they may have been at the time, they are true disposable pop: very difficult to find anything by them nowadays on slsk)
