Throw your hands up at me! Last week you picked Destiny's Child as your top number one of 2000, just pipping Kylie and Britney with 36 ticks. Unsurprisingly Westloife were shunned by you all. This week - oh man! Could this be the best year for number ones that we've had so far? Just typing it out has had me going "OMG!" every two seconds. 1985, people!

Not very much overlap at all (only Whitney Houston, and inevitably "We Are the World"). "West End Girls" also hit #1 in 1986 in America, so that's an overlap too, I guess. I'd say the USA list has more really great songs but also more terrible songs. Overall probably a win for Britain.

As for the quality of the year, 1986 was much better for #1's, at least in America.

But then again the UK poll does have "Into the Groove" which is better than any here. "West End Girls" does not count for this analysis as it did hit #1 in 1986 in the UK.

Foreigner is a brilliant song (artist & band are interchangeable in my eyes) but not as good as Easy Lover. Is there an essay on that? SHALL I WRITE ONE?

Call me sad but I remember writing my own top 10 most weeks at this point after listening to the top 40 countdown most if not every Sunday. 'Easy Lover', 'West End Girls' and 'The Sun Always Shines On TV' were the only songs to occupy both the #1 spot in the real chart and on my own far superior chart. I thought Madonna was merely okay and I remember hating both 'Frankie' and, bizarrely for me, '19' at the time.

Thing is, all of those - except "O Sheila" and "Heaven" and maybe the Lionel Richie - were big big hits in the UK too, they just missed the top somehow.

I would've thought one of the hallmarks of a True Poptimist is that they never get tired of anything.

(ALso, thirding Dave and Annie love. This was definitely my favorite Eurorythmic album.)
