Back after a short absence it's the Pazz and Jop poll for 1991 - a particular blockbuster of a poll this with TEN ticks to be shared between 28 singles (would have been 29 but for C&C Music Factory cropping up last year too).

There's a fair bit of ground to cover in the comments boxes, I'm thinking!

[Poll #845917]

1990: Time For The (Poptimist) Guru

1. Groove Is In The Heart (48 votes)
2. Vogue (42)
3. Nothing Compares 2 U (34)
4. Gonna Make You Sweat (28)
5. Been Caught Stealin (26)
6. Justify My Love (25)
7. Hold On (24)
8. Kool Thing (21)
9. Epic (19)
10=. Welcome To The Terrordome (18)
10=. 911 Is A Joke (18)

Note very rapid drop off in vote totals from 1-3 down.

I used to have the previous album, Temperamental, which is not bad at all, and the video for "Hey Little Boy" - Syndicate of Sound's "Little Girl" with the words changed - which is very funny, just the way Christina pouts and looks cute and bitchy at the same time. Not Cher so much as Lene Lovich-Debbie Harry going into cute-bitch mode.

But I would be disturbed if "I Touch Myself" wins. Mark likes the Divinyls because they're on the Buffy OST.

There's an excellent meme! Mine was It's The End Of The World As We Know It.

OST staple

haha I only really got to know "I Touch Myself" cos it's on the soundtrack to the first Austin Powers movie!

(also haha somehow I got it into my BRANE that because Susanna Hoffs is on the OST, and is married to Jay Roach, Hoffs was also lead singer of The Divinyls. Or something.)

Well, they both have trouble staying in tune, and Courtney is far LOUDER. But it's more the way her voice can rip you up - which ultimately isn't Ashlee's personality, anyway.

for some mental 11 year old me reason, i slowed down the tape of Kim Wilde's "chequered love" to count the beeps/beats before the song started proper.

Never heard this before either! Don't think much of it - getting dangerously close to Fun Lovin' Criminals territory. However, the first 3rd Bass LP, The Cactus Album, from 1989 or thereabouts is a lot of fun. Several songs on it are as good as "Ice Ice Baby", I'd say.

USE CORRECT FACTS PLS ;)

what happened was kurt's throat was fvcked (possibly due to touring/possibly due to large amount of druqs), and as it had been DECREED that all artists MUST sing live at this point in TOTP history (beginning of the end, in my opinion), despite kurt's begging they wouldn't let him mime, hence the performance we got.

anyone who sa anything else is WRONG ;)

if it wasn't for the singer's DREADFUL 'tache this may have remained in the top ten selection, but it just lost out...

yes, i concur. partly cos it only cost $600 and they recorded it in ten minutes etcetc. i think i was also a "first alBUM better" snob after about 6 months...

they are ALL* brilliant, i hadn't realised quite how indie i'd been in '91 until i saw this list...

i was devouring every word of NME at this time, it took slightly longer for me to fall out of love with it than tom (ie five or six years)

*overstatement for dramatic effect, obv, even i can't defend midway still...

except, of course, they came out in the september i think, but then were made more irrelevant than pink floyd in 1977 by SLTS, so highly unlikely anyone would vote for it end of year, plus it was mainly rub (live and let die notwithstanding)

i'm not a hugely passionate fan, but i do heart slanted and enchanted, although it took me about a year to get into (and i'd bought it a year after it came out) having bought it (on tape obv) during my first week of college. to me they fill a similar niche to the lemonheads or teenage fanclub, lovelorn, not very grungy but still the odd squealy gtr. will that do? ;)

Oh, I doubt she'd have sung it with an excess of respect, as I'm guessing that she took the song as BEING ABOUT HER (just as I took "Autobiography" as being about me), so the whole point would have been for her to get up in front of her fans and sing "Make me over," and then "Look at my face/My name is Might Have Been/My name is Never Was/My name's Forgotten" and enjoy while people gasped.

Have you seen Ashlee doing "Sweet Dreams"? She prances around the stage flourishing a couple of white capes.
